11 people have been confirmed dead and over 50 others injured following a road traffic accident involving a Super Metro bus and a lorry at the Ahero Junction, Kisumu County.
According to reports, the accident happened near Boya approaching the Ahero interchange from Kericho on Monday, January 29 at around 3:20am.
In a statement, Super Metro confirmed the incident and conveyed its condolences to the bereaved families.
“As Supermetro family would like to inform the public that it’s so unfortunate that one of our busses was involved in an accident before Awasi along Kisumu,Nairobi highway,” the statement read in part.
“We wish a quick recovery to those who are in the hospital and pass our sincere condolences to the families that lost their loved ones.”
Multiple casualties have been taken to the Ahero Sub-County Hospital while critical cases were directed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Kenya Red Cross is actively involved in providing Psychosocial Support and managing a Tracing Desk.
“Our ambulance crew, part of a multi-agency response team, has been actively responding, ensuring at least three injured individuals were taken to Ahero Sub-County Hospital. We are also assisting in referring critical cases to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital,” wrote E-Plus Ambulances Kenya.
This comes a day after The Star’s Journalist Dickens died after being involved in a head on collision along the Kakamega- Kisumu Road early morning on January 26.
At the time of his death, Wasonga was a Production Director with Radio Nam Lolwe, and the Chairman of the Kisumu Journalists Network (KJN).
Nakuru- Eldoret Highway Accident
Several accidents have also been reported along the Nakuru- Eldoret highway.
In the latest accident on this road, 15 people were killed and 29 others injured on January 9, 2024.
This was after 5 people had been confirmed dead at Timboroa on an early morning crush on January 4.
Another 7 people were also confirmed dead in an accident involving a matatu and two trailers along the same highway on December 31, 2023.

NTSA Road Safety Status 2023
A report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicated that 2,080 fatalities were recorded in 2023/2024 as compared to 2,378 registered during the same period in the previous year.
In addition, 10,115 serious and slight injuries were reported in the 2023/2024 financial year compared to 8,604 in the 2022/2023 year.
“There is a decrease of 12.53% in absolute deaths in this financial year as compared to same period last financial year (2022/2023),” said NTSA.
Pedestrians recorded the highest number of deaths, 788 followed by motorcyclists, 55 and passengers, 324.

“The highest number of road fatalities is pedestrian deaths at 37.88%. In the same period last year, this category of road users’ contribution was 35.62%,” added the Authority.
Besides, other categories of causalities included pillion passengers (190), drivers (184) and pedal cyclists (39).
In 2022/2023, pedestrians and motor cyclists recorded the highest number of fatalities with 847 and 631 respectively.
Similarly, this was followed by passengers (446), pillion passengers (216), drivers (211) and pedal cyclist (27).
