The government through the Ministry of Interior has initiated several programs aimed at addressing the cycle of insecurity in the North Rift.

In a statement made on August 17, the Interior Ministry emphasized the urgent need for educational infrastructure and resources in the region plagued by cattle rustling and conflict.

According to the ministry, education is a crucial pathway to economic growth and peace, thereby reducing the likelihood of conflict.

“Education is one of the surest ways for breaking the cycle of insecurity in the North Rift,” said Kindiki.

“It offers a clear path for economic progress while reducing the chances of communities resorting to conflict and criminal activities.”

Kindiki Highlights Initiatives Launched 

To combat these issues, Kindiki announced that the government has initiated several programmes aimed at improving access to education in the area.

Such initiatives include the construction of new schools, equipping them with adequate facilities, and providing learning materials to students.

These initiatives aim to foster cooperation and peace among students from rival communities.

“To bring lasting peace, we will build five special schools where children from various communities, including Pokot, Marakwet, and Turkana, can study together, live together, and cooperate so that they can help us maintain peace even in the future,” Kindiki said.

Furthermore, Kindiki also highlighted that the initiative will be implemented in collaboration with local governments so as to help students acquire essential skills and explore various career paths.

“These programs involve partnerships with government agencies, private sector and professionals from different sectors who will offer guidance, motivation, and support to students throughout their education journey”

Education As a Tool to Combat Insecurity in the North Rift

Additionally, Kindiki said that 15 schools previously vandalized by bandits will be rebuilt, ensuring that all pupils can return to a secure learning environment.

“15 schools that were vandalized and destroyed by bandits here in Tiaty Constituency will be reconstructed.”

“All pupils must go back to school, and the government will make sure they are secure to facilitate uninterrupted learning,” said CS Kindiki.

The government is also enhancing technical and vocational education by establishing training institutes, thus improving job opportunities.

By empowering youth through education, the government aims to create a foundation for lasting peace and understanding among communities in the North Rift.

“The Ministry is optimistic about the long-term impact of these educational initiatives on security and socio-economic development in the North Rift region,” read the statement.
