Coast Bus is Kenya’s oldest intercity coach operator, a household name on the Nairobi–Mombasa corridor and a pioneer of long-distance road transport in East Africa.

More than five decades after its founding, the company still runs scheduled day and night services across Kenya and into Tanzania, even as newer rivals and shuttles chip away at its market share.

Founding and Early History

Coast Bus Company is one of Kenya’s oldest private intercity bus operators. The company began operating around 1968, initially establishing itself through passenger services between Nairobi and Mombasa.

Although publicly available records do not clearly identify a single founder, the company has historically been associated with the Mirza family, with Ajaz Mirza serving as its managing director for several decades.

By 2015, he was reported to have guided the company for about 40 years.

Coast Bus remains privately owned, and it has not widely disclosed its detailed shareholder structure.

In 2024, the company joined Buscar Sacco to comply with National Transport and Safety Authority requirements that transport operators maintain a minimum fleet of 30 vehicles.

The arrangement represented an operational merger or affiliation, not clear evidence that Coast Bus had been sold.

Business Model and Market Position

Coast Bus operates a traditional intercity transport model built around passenger fares and parcel delivery services.

The company established its business on the Nairobi-Mombasa corridor, one of Kenya’s busiest travel routes, and has historically targeted mainstream travelers rather than the premium market.

Its competitive advantage has been affordability, brand recognition, and established route networks.

In recent years, Coast Bus has faced growing competition from operators such as Easy Coach, Modern Coast, Tahmeed Coach, Ena Coach and Guardian Angel, many of which have invested in newer fleets, digital booking platforms and executive travel services.

Routes and Destinations

Coast Bus operates mainly between Mombasa and Nairobi, with routes extending to western, Rift Valley and eastern Kenya.

The Mombasa–Nairobi route is the company’s main corridor.

Key stops include Mariakani, Voi, Mtito Andei, Kibwezi and Emali.

Coast Bus also serves Malindi, Mtwapa, Mariakani and Changamwe along the Coast.

In western Kenya, it serves Kisumu, Kakamega, Mumias, Bungoma, Webuye, Chavakali, Kapsabet, Kericho and Malaba.

Other destinations include Nakuru, Naivasha, Machakos Junction and Kitui.

The company also operates cross-border services.

Its listed international destinations include Kampala in Uganda and Arusha in Tanzania, with routes connecting these cities to Nairobi, Mombasa and other Kenyan towns.

Routes and departure schedules vary, so some destinations may not run daily.

Coast Bus Classes and Fares

Coast Bus offers two main seating categories, Regular and VIP.

Regular seats provide standard coach travel, while VIP seats offer additional comfort, including more legroom, power outlets and Wi-Fi.

Fares vary by destination. The Nairobi–Mombasa fare is listed at Ksh1,200 for Regular and Ksh2,500 for VIP. Nairobi–Kisumu and Nairobi–Malaba cost Ksh2,500 for Regular and Ksh5,000 for VIP.

The Nairobi–Malindi fare is Ksh2,500 for Regular and Ksh3,500 for VIP. Nairobi–Kampala costs Ksh2,200 for Regular and Ksh4,000 for VIP, while Mombasa–Kampala is Ksh3,000 for Regular and Ksh5,000 for VIP.

Other listed fares include Ksh1,200 for Nairobi–Eldoret, Ksh2,000 for Nairobi–Webuye, Ksh2,500 for Nairobi–Bungoma, Ksh2,500 for Mombasa–Nakuru and Ksh3,500 for Mombasa–Eldoret.

Fares and available classes vary by route and may change. Passengers should confirm the applicable fare when booking.
