The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has given an update on the progress of the investigations on the shooting of Rex Masai.
Rex Masai was shot on Thursday (evening), June 20, during the anti-finance bill demonstrations in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
In the update issued on Saturday, June 22, IPOA said different investigative teams are working on Rex Masai’s shooting case.
The Authority said one team is in the process of identifying and confirming the suspected officer who allegedly shot Masai.
“Another team from IPOA is in the process of identifying and confirming the suspected officer,” read the update in part.

Besides, IPOA revealed that another team has witnessed and documented the postmortem on the body of Rex Masai who was allegedly fatally killed by a police bullet
“Upon completion of the investigations, IPOA will generate a report and submit it to the ODPP for action,” IPOA said.
Rex Masai Shot
In a video footage shared on social media, a crowd is seen running away from police officers who were trying to dispersing the group at around 7pm in the evening on that fateful day.
Afterwards, a plain clothed police officer is seen pulling out a gun and firing a shot at the protesters.
It was during these incidents that a bullet pierced Rex’s leg causing him to bleed out.

Reports indicated that he spent more than 20 minutes trying to seek medical attention before being rushed to Bliss Medical Centre along Moi Avenue where he died while receiving treatment.
Julian Manya, Rex’s mother, said her son was on his way from work when he was caught in the protests in town.
His friend, Alex said the hospital delayed opening their doors because of fear that they were protestors being chased by the police.

ODPP Directive to IPOA
Following his death the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) directed IPOA to conduct thorough investigations into the case.
“Pursuant to the provisions of Article 157(4) of the Constitution, the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed the IPOA to carry out thorough and comprehensive investigations into the matter,” said the ODPP.
ODPP asked IPOA to forward the resultant inquiry file and report to its offices within 21 days.
“Thereafter, the resultant inquiry file together with the report should be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) not later than twenty-one (21) days from the date hereof.”
