The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) has condemned the attacks against former KTN journalist and CEO of Africa Uncensored, John Allan Namu.
In a statement on July 29, the Non- Governmental Organization (NGO) defended the journalist, terming the attacks against him unwarranted and deeply troubling.
“The attacks against Africa Uncensored are unwarranted and deeply troubling,” reads part of the statement.
In addition, the ICFJ emphasized the need to allow journalists to go about their work freely as it is a vital public service while expressing its support for Namu and Kenyan Journalists community as a whole.
“Journalism is not a crime, but a vital public service. Namu and the entire team at Africa Uncensored, along with other journalists in Kenya, must be free to do their jobs, and press freedoms must be upheld.
This is only more important in times of crisis. ICFJ stands with Africa Uncensored and all journalists in Kenya,” the statement read.
The statement by International Center for Journalists came days after Namu was forced to clarify reports of receiving money from American based organization Ford Foundation.
According to the reports shared online, Namu received $200,000 in grant from the company in August 2023, and an additional $50,000 in April 2024.
In response to the allegations, Namu said that the information was true, adding that African Uncensored has never hidden its sources of funding.
“This is true. We have never denied or hidden our sources of funding or partnerships. I have always said that the proof of our intentions is the work we do.
“I’m ready to defend all the work we have put in,” he said in response to allegations of receiving funding for violence.

You have upheld our work as a beacon, corrected us when we were wrong, and now you stand with us. However, this fight is about more than just our credibility; it is about everyone’s voices,” Namu said.

Affiliation with Ford Foundation
In an earlier statement on Monday, July 15, President William Ruto accused the Ford Foundation of sponsoring violence during the anti-government protests.
Ruto claimed that some foreign organizations had a hand in the events that led to the chaos witnessed during the demonstrations and destruction of property through looting targeting businesses.
However, American Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Ford Foundation denied the accusations adding that it acknowledges the right of Kenyans to peacefully advocate for a just and equitable country.
