Kenya’s automotive and media fraternity is mourning the passing of Trevor Lamenya — fondly known by many as “Big Boy Trev”.
Lamenya was a towering figure in the country’s automotive circles, widely respected for his deep knowledge of the automotive industry and his larger-than-life media presence. He died on the night of Friday, August 1, following a short illness, his family confirmed.
For more than a decade, Big Boy Trev helped shape public discourse around automobiles, branding, and communication, becoming a trusted voice both on and off the screen.
Whether breaking down vehicle specs for a mainstream audience or consulting for executives in high-level boardrooms, the automotive enthusiast brought the same unwavering passion for cars that first earned him recognition.
His vibrant personality and technical expertise made him a household name — and a mentor to many.
Career profile
A graduate of Daystar University with a background in communication and media, Lamenya wore many hats.
He has worked as the Editor-in-Chief of Cullinan Media and PR Ltd and previously held key editorial roles at AutoVault Media Ltd, where he served as a motor journalist and director.
Through these platforms, he provided consumer-focused content and expert analysis that connected deeply with Kenya’s growing motoring community.
He was also widely recognized for his role on the Cars with Big Boy Trev (CBBT) automotive show, which aired on KTN, NTV, and other mainstream media platforms. His charm, deep knowledge, and engaging delivery made him a household name among car enthusiasts across the country.
Beyond television, Lamenya extended his influence on digital platforms through his YouTube channel, (CBBT), with over 21,900 subscribers and 1.7 million views as of April 2, 2025.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Lamenya was not only a media personality but also a seasoned consultant in corporate communications and marketing across Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
He described himself as an “automotive industry expert” who helped deliver “impactful solutions” to complex challenges in transport strategy and branding. At the heart of it all, however, was his unmistakable love for cars — and for people.

Kenyans pay tribute to Big Boy Trev
Colleagues, fans, and industry insiders have mourned Big Boy Trev as a warm, engaging professional who made time to mentor upcoming talent while remaining a vibrant personality in front of the camera.
Among those paying tribute was entrepreneur and city car dealer Khalif Kairo, who recalled how Trev played a key role in helping him break into the media space.
“Did a shoot with Big Boy Trev sometime back in 2019 and he really helped me break out by connecting me with key people in the media space, helping my brand get exposure. May he rest in peace — such an amazing soul. May God comfort his family,” said Kairo.

Lamenya mourned
Content creator and YouTuber Waigera- on his part- credited Trev with blazing a trail for others in the motoring content scene.
“Today we celebrate the person who paved way for majority of Kenyan automotive content creators. To the person who always entertained us on KTN as we learned about different car brands — may the Lord Almighty rest your soul in eternal peace. RIP Big Boy Trev,” Waigera said.
On his part, Muriithi Pius fondly recalled a memorable segment stating, “I still remember his review of the Nissan Skyline Crossover. I immediately loved that car. May he rest in peace.”
Reflecting on the recent loss of reggae MC Fullstop and now Trev, George Diano expressed his sorrow.
“We were getting to terms with the demise of MC Fullstop and now Big Boy Trev is gone after a short illness? He used to host Cars with Big Boy Trev on NTV. The man had a special talent in automotives. This is a really sad evening. May his soul rest in peace,” Diano said.
Automotive enthusiast Delvin Duncans added, “What’s with this year, man! I met Trev at some event in Carco Race Way in Perth, a great guy and enthusiast. I enjoyed his shows on KTN and his YouTube CBBT. A sad day in the motorsport industry and entertainment industry at large.”
