The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has announced 150 vacancies for judges and magistrates.
In a notice dated Monday, June 8, 2025, the Commission called on qualified applicants to apply.
“The Judicial Service Commission (ISC) is a Constitutional Commission established under Article 171 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, to promote and facilitate the independence and accountability of the Judiciary and the efficient, effective, and transparent administration of justice. The Commission invites applications from qualified persons to fill the following positions,” read part of the notice.
According to the Commission, the positions that have been declared vacant include: Judge of the Court of Appeal (15 posts), Judge of the High Court (20 posts), Judge of the Environment and Land Court (10 posts), Resident Magistrate, with the highest number of vacancies at 60 posts, Resident Kadhi (5 posts), and Resident Magistrate/Adjudicator for Small Claims Courts (40 posts).

Additionally, the JSC directed interested and qualified persons to visit its job portal: https://jsc.go.ke/jobs-2/for for detailed job descriptions, requirements for appointment, and instructions on how to apply.
All applications should reach the Commission no later than June 30, 2025, at 5:00 P.M.

Only shortlisted and successful candidates will be contacted. Canvassing in any form will lead to automatic disqualification.
For one to apply as a Court of Appeal judge one must meet the following requirements:
- A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or equivalent is a common requirement.
- Being a qualified Advocate of the High Court or a legal practitioner in Kenya is also a path to becoming a judge of the Court of Appeal.
- Candidates typically need at least ten years of experience in a judicial capacity, such as serving as a judge or magistrate, or in a relevant legal field.
- Applicants may also need to demonstrate a high degree of professional competence, good communication skills, fairness, and a commitment to public service.
Qualifications to be a judge at the Environment and Land Court
Elsewhere, below are the Qualifications one needs to be a judge of the Environment and Land Court:
- The candidate must hold a law degree from a recognized university, be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, or possess an equivalent qualification in a common-law jurisdiction.
- The candidate must have at least ten years of experience in one or more of the following capacities:
- As a superior court judge (e.g., High Court or equivalent). • As a professionally qualified magistrate.
- As a distinguished academic or legal practitioner, or in other relevant legal fields. • A combination of the above experiences, aggregating to at least ten years.
Qualifications to apply to be a magistrate:
- The candidate must hold a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognized university.
- Alternatively, the candidate must be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya or possess an equivalent qualification in a common-law jurisdiction.
- The candidate must have at least three years of legal practice experience as: An advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

- A legal practitioner in a public or private institution.
- A distinguished academic in law or another relevant legal field.
- The candidate must be admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and hold a valid practicing certificate, unless applying as an academic or public servant with equivalent qualifications.
