On Thursday, January 9, 2024, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba officially released the results of the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
A total of 965,512 candidates registered for the exams, marking a 7.19% increase compared to previous years.
Among the candidates, 246,391 students attained direct university entry qualifications with a Grade C+ and above, translating to 25.3%.
This represents a notable improvement from 201,133 students (22.27%) in 2023, a trend attributed to the new or improved grading system.
Furthermore, 476,889 candidates attained a Grade C Minus and above, qualifying for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses.
Additionally, 605,774 students achieved a pass grade of D Plus and above, reflecting a significant milestone in academic achievement for this year’s cohort.
KCSE 2024 Grade A and A- Results Across Schools
A total of 1,693 candidates, or 0.18%, achieved an overall grade of A in the 2024 KCSE exams, compared to 1,216 candidates, or 0.14%, in 2023.
Of these top-performing students, 1,375 came from national schools, 163 from extra-county schools, 4 from county schools, 9 from sub-county schools, and 142 from private schools.
In addition, 7,743 candidates scored an A- (minus), while 19,150 attained a B+ (plus). A further 43,120 students secured a B (plain), and 75,347 earned a B- (minus).
The distribution of A Minus (A-) grades varied significantly across school categories, with national schools recording the highest number, achieving 4,611 candidates.
Extra county schools followed with 2,060 candidates attaining the grade, while private schools had 619 students.
Sub-county schools reported 302 A- achievers, and county schools had the fewest, with just 151 candidates reaching the grade.

B+ and Below Performance Across School
In the B+ (plus) category, National schools led with 6,947 candidates securing the grade, followed closely by extra county schools with 7,667 students achieving B+.
County schools had 1,102 students, while sub-county schools and private schools recorded 1,901, 1,533 candidates at the same grade level respectively.
National schools had 8,185 students achieving B plain grades, while extra county schools recorded 18,925 candidates. County schools followed with 31,712 students securing B plain grades, and sub-county schools reported 38,309 achievers. Private schools had 6,362 students attaining this grade.
For B- (B minus), national schools had 7,672 students, extra county schools recorded 18,925 candidates, and county schools had 36,678 students securing B-. Sub-county schools reported 29,736 students, while private schools had 10,723 students achieving the grade.
C Performances
The majority of students fell within the middle grades, with 99,338 achieving a C+ (plus), 111,717 scoring a C (plain), and 118,781 earning a C- (minus).
Under the C Plus (C+) grades, National schools had 8,185 students while extra county schools recorded 18,925 candidates.
County schools followed closely with 18,309 students and sub-county schools reported 31,712 achievers. Private schools had 5,826 students reaching this grade.
National schools had 7,672 students attaining C grades, while extra county schools recorded 31,712 achievers. County schools followed with 38,309 students, and sub-county schools had 36,678 candidates securing C grades.
Private schools contributed 6,362 students to the total. This spread indicates a broad level of achievement, with sub-county and county schools seeing the highest numbers of C grade achievers.
National schools had 5,498 students achieving C- grades, while extra county schools recorded 18,925 candidates. County schools followed with 18,783 students securing C-, and sub-county schools and private schools reported 29,736 and 7,688 achievers respectively.
Private schools had 7,688 students attaining this grade.

D+ and Below Results
The number of candidates with a D+ (plus) was 128,885, while 153,334 scored a D (plain), and 151,487 attained a D- (minus). At the lower end of the scale, 48,333 candidates scored an E.
National schools had 3,409 students achieving D+ grades, while extra county schools recorded 9,110 candidates. County schools followed with 18,783 students attaining D+, and sub-county schools reported 43,468 achievers. Private schools had 6,362 students securing this grade.
For the D grade, national schools had 1,714 students, extra county schools recorded 5,498 candidates, and county schools had 36,678 students. Sub-county schools had 57,157 achievers, while private schools contributed 10,723 students.
In the D- category, national schools had 743 students, extra county schools recorded 3,409 candidates, and county schools had 29,736 achievers. Sub-county schools reported 78,448 students, and private schools had 7,688 students securing the grade.
Lastly, 48,333 students across all schools received an E grade.
