The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary partial closure of a section of Waiyaki Way (A8 Road) between GTC and Kempinski on the Mombasa-bound lanes to facilitate highway maintenance works.
In a notice on Friday, July 24, KeNHA said the partial closure will take effect from Friday, July 31, 2026, until Monday, August 31, 2026.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) notifies the public that a section of Waiyaki Way (A8 Road) between GTC and Kempinski on the Mombasa-bound lanes will be temporarily closed from Friday, July 31, 2026, to Monday, August 31, 2026,” stated KeNHA.
According to the authority, the temporary closure is intended to allow maintenance works on the affected section of the highway.
KeNHA Advisory to Motorists and Alternative Routes
KeNHA advised motorists using Waiyaki Way during the period to utilize the sections of the road that will remain open and to consider alternative routes to minimize traffic disruption.

The authority further urged road users to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals who will be deployed at the site to manage traffic flow.
“All motorists intending to use Waiyaki Way during this period will utilize the unclosed sections of this road as well as consider using alternative routes to ensure minimal traffic disruption,” the notice stated.
KeNHA added that normal traffic operations along the affected section of Waiyaki Way will resume once the maintenance works are completed.
Motorists can use Lower Kabete Road as an alternative route to bypass the affected section between GTC and Kempinski. The road connects Westlands with Spring Valley and has previously served as a diversion during traffic disruptions along Waiyaki Way.
Peponi Road is another viable alternative for motorists seeking to avoid congestion around the Westlands section of Waiyaki Way.
Road users heading towards Upper Hill, Kilimani, or Mombasa Road can consider using James Gichuru Road and Ring Road Kileleshwa as an alternative route. This may help motorists bypass the affected section of Waiyaki Way.
Motorists may also use the available service lanes along Waiyaki Way, as the closure announced by KeNHA is a partial closure rather than a complete shutdown of the affected road section.
KeNHA Earlier Closure of Waiyaki Way
KeNHA earlier announced a three-month partial closure of a section of Waiyaki Way in Nairobi to facilitate ongoing pedestrian infrastructure works in the Westlands area.

In a notice signed by Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli, KeNHA stated that the affected stretch is on the Nakuru-bound carriageway between Karuna Close and Westlands Roundabout.
The authority said the closure would run from June 25 to September 25, 2026, to allow contractors to extend the existing pedestrian footbridge near Dunhill Towers and construct the proposed Fogo Gaucho–QuickMart Westlands footbridge.
KeNHA noted that the temporary traffic disruption is necessary to support the construction works and improve pedestrian safety along the busy corridor.
During the period, motorists are required to use the designated service lane, with traffic being managed in accordance with the approved traffic management plan for the project.
Road users were also advised to exercise caution, observe temporary traffic signs and follow the directions of traffic marshals and police officers deployed at the site.
