KeNHA Clears Air After Reports of Eviction of Traders Along Murang’a Highway

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has dismissed a public notice claiming that the it plans to clear all encroachments within the road reserve along Murang’a Highway.

In a clarification shared on February 27, the authority described the notice as misleading, deliberately intended to create unnecessary anxiety among traders and the public, and “not reflective of any ongoing or planned operations in the area”.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a notice currently circulating online alleging that the Authority intends to clear encroachments within the road reserve along Murang’a Highway is false,” the authority stated.

KeNHA urged the public to verify all information shared on social media through its official channels only before acting on or circulating it.

Forged Eviction Notice Targeting Murang’a Traders

The fake notice dated February 27 claimed that all traders operating stalls, kiosks, structures, and merchandise within the road reserve along Murang’a Highway were required to remove them within seven days.

The notice further stated that the eviction was intended to facilitate the construction of designated roadside stalls, thereby improving safety, reducing congestion, and ensuring orderly highway use.

“This is to facilitate the construction of designated roadside stalls to improve road safety, reduce congestion, and ensure the orderly use of the highway corridor,” read the fake notice in part.

It further claimed that traders wishing to resume operations post-clearance would need to pay an annual revenue fee of KSh 70,000 per stall, obtain approvals from county government departments, and comply with relevant provisions under the 2007 Act, with enforcement action for non-compliance.

KeNHA Clearance on Thika Superhighway

Earlier, KeNHA issued a public notice on February 23, 2026, announcing the legitimate clearance of roadside encroachments along specific sections of the Thika Superhighway (Kihunguro both bounds, Allsops both bounds, and Delview sections). 

The notice, signed by the Director General  Luka Kimeli, gave traders seven days to remove their wares to enable the construction of designated roadside stations aimed at enhancing corridor functionality, improving safety standards, alleviating traffic congestion, and supporting ongoing road safety improvement initiatives.

“The project is part of the Authority’s ongoing road safety improvement initiative aimed at reducing accidents, enhancing order within the road reserve, and ensuring the unobstructed flow of traffic along the Highway,” read part of the notice.
