The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a public notice announcing the temporary closure of service lanes of the Thika Superhighway (A2) at Kihunguro.
The disruption, which will affect traffic on both the Nairobi-bound and Thika-bound service lanes, is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 20, 2025, and will run until Saturday, December 20, 2025.
Reason for the closure
In the notice signed by Acting Director General Luka Kimeli, KeNHA explained that the Kihunguro footbridge is being built to address long-standing concerns about pedestrian safety and traffic flow in the busy section of the superhighway.
“This is to allow for construction works of the Kihunguro footbridge column bases and stub columns at the section. We are urging road users to be patient and cooperate with traffic marshals on site.”
Kihunguro, situated between Juja and Ruiru, has experienced significant pedestrian movement over the years, with numerous incidents involving vehicles and pedestrians.
KeNHA emphasized that the temporary inconvenience will lead to lasting benefits for motorists and pedestrians alike.
Impact on Thika Superhighway Traffic and Motorists
During the two-month closure, traffic on both service lanes will be diverted around the construction area.
Motorists are advised to strictly follow the proposed traffic management plan, which includes diversions through designated routes to minimize delays.
A detailed traffic management plan has been outlined, with hoarding and working areas clearly marked.
Motorists heading to Nairobi and Thika are urged to approach the area with caution and to allow extra time for their journeys.
“We are committed to ensuring that the construction works are completed within the scheduled period and with minimal disruption to road users. As we continue with these critical safety enhancements, we request the public’s understanding and cooperation.”
KeNHA has deployed traffic marshals and police officers at the site to guide motorists and manage congestion.
Pedestrian Safety at the Core
The Thika Superhighway, one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors, has, over the years, experienced high numbers of pedestrian accidents, particularly at informal crossing points.
Kihunguro has been one of the most affected areas due to the absence of a proper footbridge, forcing many residents to dash across multiple lanes of fast-moving traffic.
While some motorists have expressed concern about the expected traffic build-up during the construction period, many pedestrians have welcomed the project.

Locals say the footbridge will bring a long-awaited solution to a dangerous crossing point that has claimed lives and caused countless injuries.
KeNHA has appealed to all road users to exercise patience and cooperate fully with the ongoing works. It also urged commercial transport operators, matatu drivers, and heavy truck operators to observe lane discipline and follow diversion signs to avoid unnecessary traffic jams.
Project Significance and Timeline
The Kihunguro footbridge project is part of a broader national infrastructure program aimed at modernizing Kenya’s highways and improving safety standards.
