Kenya Airways on Thursday night May 2 announced potential extended delays for flights departing from Nairobi due to severe weather conditions.
The announcement came after heavy rains in the city caused major traffic congestion, slowing down both passengers and airline staff trying to reach the airport.
As a result, the national carrier diverted a number of flights and warned customers to expect extended delays for some departures from Nairobi.
“Due to the heavy rains and heavy traffic on the roads in Nairobi affecting our passengers and staff, we may have extended delays for some of our departures out of Nairobi,” read the statement.
Passengers were informed that in the event of flight disruptions, they would receive notifications via email or text messages.

Kenya Airways has also emphasized that safety remains their top priority during this disruption.
“The safety and well-being of our crew and customers is our number one priority.”
On its part, the Kenya Airports Authority, KAA asked passengers to plan ahead following the traffic snarl-up.
“Due to heavy traffic affecting sections of Mombasa Road this evening, we advise passengers to plan ahead, arrive at the airport early to avoid any potential delays in catching their flights. Your safety & convenience are our top priorities. Safe travels,” said KAA in a statement.
Challenges experienced by Kenya Airways Passengers at JKIA
Furthermore, the disruptions at Kenya Airways coincided with incidents of flooding and leaking roofs at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where heavy rains have led to flight diversions and delays.
The airport experienced flooding in certain areas, impacting operations and passenger transit.

In a statement on Sunday, April 28, the KAA said that persistent heavy rains in Nairobi had led to flooding at JKIA’s Tower Avenue underpass.
“Normal operations at the airport continue and access to all terminals remains open. However, due to the situation, traffic is expected to be heavier than normal. We recommend that all vehicles use the main entrance to enter and exit the airport until further notice,” read the statement in part.
