Kenya Airways (KQ)has taken a huge step in promoting diversity and inclusion by welcoming its first cabin crew member with albinism.
The airline celebrated International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) by highlighting the importance of inclusion and embracing diversity within its workforce.
On June 13, KQ marked the day by introducing Loise Lianda, the first cabin crew member with albinism, to the public.
Lianda, who is also the first Miss Albinism in Kenya, expressed her excitement about joining the airline and emphasized the significance of the day.
“I am the first cabin crew member with albinism at Kenya Airways. This makes me feel so good about myself,” she said.
Kenya Airways COO Welcomes Lianda
The airline’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), George Kamal, welcomed Lianda to the team emphasizing the importance of inclusion and diversity within the organization.
“Your presence here brings a lot of joy for us and because it coincides with the 10th International albinism awareness, for me it’s something really remarkable that I’m here on this day and I have with me the first cabin crew in Kenya Airways,” he said.
“I’m pretty sure you will do very well moving forward and I am confident that yourself and anybody who has any challenges from our staff will do excellent to prove themselves, that they are doing as equal as everyone else.”

Kenya Airways Commitment to Inclusivity
He also noted that the airline’s efforts towards inclusivity are part of its broader commitment to the well-being of its passengers.
The COO further explained that the company has been working towards creating a welcoming environment for all passengers, regardless of their abilities.
He added that the airline’s cabin crew members undergo extensive training to support passengers with disabilities, ensuring that every guest feels valued and respected
“We are committed to ensuring seamless travel for all our guests, including those with challenges. We have trained our staff to support passengers with disabilities, and we are proud to have Leanda on board,” he said.
International Albinism Awareness Day
International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) is celebrated annually on June 13 to raise awareness about albinism, a rare genetic disorder characterized by the absence or reduction of melanin, resulting in pale skin, hair, and eyes.
The day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18, 2014, with the first observance in 2015.

This year’s IAAD theme is “A Decade of Collective Progress,” highlighting the progress made in promoting albinism awareness and inclusion globally.
