The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned citizens of impending floods as the country prepares to enter the long rains season. In a statement dated Saturday, March 8, 2025, Kenya Met Director Dr. David Gikungu announced that heavy rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours is expected in several regions across the country on March 9, 2025.
According to the Weatherman, areas forecasted to experience significant rainfall include parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands located both west and east of the Rift Valley, as well as the Nairobi area and the southeastern lowlands.
“Heavy rainfall of more than 20mm in 24 hours is expected in parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Highlands, and the Nairobi area on March 9, 2025,” the statement noted.
Additionally, the Kenya Meteorological Department indicated that rainfall intensity is likely to increase to over 30mm within 24 hours and spread to parts of northwestern Kenya on March 10, 2025. The heavy rainfall is projected to lessen in intensity starting March 11, 2025.
Kenya Met List Regions to Experience Heavy Rainfall
The meteorological service also highlighted specific areas of concern that are expected to receive heavy rainfall from March 9 to March 11.
These areas include the counties of Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Marsabit, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, and Kajiado.

Furthermore, the Kenya Meteorological Department advised residents in the mentioned areas to be vigilant for potential floods, flash floods, and reduced visibility.

They also recommended that individuals within these regions seek shelter under trees and near barred windows to minimize the risk of lightning strikes.
Further, Kenya Met stated that any updates or changes would be communicated promptly.

The message from the Kenya Meteorological Department was directed to the Presidency, the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Environment and Climate Change, the National Intelligence Service, the Kenya Red Cross Society, the Kenya Maritime Authority, the Kenya Ports Authority, the Kenya Airports Authority, the National Disaster Operations Centre, the National Disaster Management Unit, media outlets, government ministries, the Council of Governors, and County Directors of Meteorological Services.
