The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued an update on expected weather conditions as Kenya marks Mazingira Day on Friday, October 10, 2025.

KMD, in an update on Thursday, said that most parts of the country are set to experience generally sunny and dry conditions on Mazingira Day, when most Kenyans mark the country’s national environmental conservation effort through tree planting drives and other green initiatives around the country.

The weatherman noted that occasional light rainfall may occur in parts of Western Kenya and along the Coastal strip, offering an opportunity for effective environmental activities. However, KMD noted that the prevailing conditions are favorable for tree planting and establishment, a key focus of Mazingira Day.

“With soils already moist in many areas, the prevailing conditions are favourable for tree planting and establishment, supporting Kenya’s ongoing environmental restoration and climate action efforts. Let’s take advantage of this day and the conducive weather to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future,” said the department in its advisory.

Mazingira Day

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry had on Wednesday urged all Kenyans to trace their primary school roots in a bid to donate and help in planting fruit trees on Mazingira Day.

“We are inviting every Kenyan to go back to their former primary school to donate and plant a fruit tree and to clean and green the school environment. This year’s campaign is anchored on a very simple yet powerful idea; Turudi primo tukadonate fruit trees na tukaclean environment,” urged Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa.

President William Ruto is expected to lead the fruit tree planting exercise at their respective former schools.

The update by KMD comes after the meteorological department, in its five-day forecast valid from October 10 to 14, 2025, indicated that rainfall is expected across several regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Coast, and North-eastern Kenya.

In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, Kenya Met predicts morning sunny intervals and partly cloudy nights, but daily afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected in a few areas (less than 33% of the region). Maximum temperatures in this region hover around 28°C–30°C.

This region covers the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

Kenya Met says rainfall is expected in several key regions in its forecast for October 10 to October 14

At the same time, the weatherman said that the Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi) will experience the coolest temperatures, with minimums dipping as low as 5 °C and 7 °C.

Mornings start with cloudy conditions or light rains over a few places, transitioning to sunny intervals by the afternoon, later in the period. This region also covers the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi.

The hottest weather conditions are expected in the North-eastern Kenya region in the counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo. Kenya Met said these counties will receive the highest maximum temperatures, reaching up to 37°C on Friday, accompanied by scattered morning and afternoon showers early in the period.

The North-western region (Turkana and Samburu Counties) will also be extremely hot, with consistent highs of 36°C and generally sunny conditions during the day.

On their part, the South-eastern lowlands (Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta Counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County) are forecast to be generally warm and sunny, with maximums of around 32°C–33°C and mostly partly cloudy nights.

Meanwhile, the Coast region (Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale Counties as well as coastal parts of Tana River County) is expected to be the hottest overnight, with minimum temperatures around 22°C–24°C.

This region anticipates persistent low-level moisture, with showers or a chance of showers over a few places daily throughout the morning, afternoon, and sometimes at night.
