The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has introduced a series of upgrades to its SGR Economy Class, enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers.
In a statement issued on July 23, the railway operator outlined several key changes aimed at improving comfort and convenience.
One of the most notable updates is the new 3 by 2 seating arrangement, which will have passengers facing the direction of travel rather than each other.
This change is expected to create a more pleasant atmosphere for passengers during travel.
“The new Economy class stands out for several features designed to enhance passenger comfort. Notably, passengers will no longer sit facing each other.”
“Instead, the 3 by 2 seating arrangement across the width of the coach will have passengers facing either the departing station or the destination station,” reads the statement in part.
Other Improved Economy Class Amenities
Additional enhancements include introduction of individual charging ports at each seat, a designated baby-changing area, foldout tray tables, and pocket seats for storing personal belongings.
“Other features include charging ports for each passenger; a baby-changing area for freshening up babies during the journey; foldout tray tables and pocket seats for placing small items.”

This announcement follows the recent launch of a new Premium Class coach, which offers reclining seats and a host of luxurious amenities, priced at Ksh12,000 per trip.
According to Kenya Railways, the Premium Class aims to provide an elevated travel experience, catering to those seeking more comfort during their travels.
Transport PS Inspects the Newly Acquired Premium SGR Coaches
On Monday July 22, Transport PS Mohammed Daghar inspected the newly acquired Madaraka Express Passenger Service Coaches, which consist of four premium coaches, three first-class coaches, and eleven upgraded economy coaches, along with a dining car and a power car.
Additionally, the new coaches are designed with ample legroom and high-quality padding to ensure a comfortable ride for all passengers.

The PS was accompanied by Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Capt. William Ruto, KPA Chairman Dalu Tayari and Kenya Railways Managing Director Phillip Mainga.
During the inspection, PS Mohammed Daghar got a feel of the new Premium class coach at Port Reitz Freight station and praised the new amenities terming them as a positive step towards the enhancement of service delivery.
“Our customers will surely enjoy riding on these coaches. The design and amenities provided are a guarantee of the nature of service we aspire to provide,” said PS Mohammed Daghar
Kenya Railways is set to implement these enhancements soon, promising to redefine travel for its customers with improved comfort and convenience.
