Kenya Railways has announced the resumption of the movement of cargo trains to and from Mombasa following an earlier halt due to the heavy rains experienced in the region.
The authority on Monday 20th November 2023, issued a statement indicating details of the resumption progress.
The Kenya Railways had announced changes in operations of the Standard Guage Railway (SGR) following floods, wash-aways and landslides that rendered various sections of the rail network impassable.
“Kenya Railways wishes to advice you that following the corporation’s intervention to restore normalcy in the sections that was damaged by the heavy rains between Mariakani and the Mombasa terminus, movement of cargo to and from Mombasa has now resumed,” read the statement in part.
SGR Cargo Trains Resumes
Further the authority affirmed that they are working round the clock to minimize any delays as normalcy resumes.
“Loading and unloading of cargo at the Port of Mombasa has also commenced, and we are now working round the clock to minimize any delays,” Kenya Railways noted.

Likewise, the railway authority stated SGR passenger train services continue as per their schedule.
“SGR passenger train services continue as per schedule,” said the authority.
Kenya Railways further assured members of the publics of the safety of their goods.

“We would like to affirm that safety and reliability remain at the core of our operations,” stated the Authority.
Kenya Railways Service Halt
Worth noting, Kenya Railways in a statement dated November 18 notified customers of an unexpected delay in the evacuation of cargo from Mombasa and Nairobi and delivery of cargo into the Port of Mombasa.
“Regrettably, we must inform you that there has been an unexpected delay in the evacuation of cargo from Mombasa and Nairobi and delivery of cargo into the Mombasa port,” teh statement read in part.
Further, it said that a section of the SGR corridor between Mombasa Terminus and Mariakani had experienced a landslide which resulted in the closure of the section for all freight trains.
“We are, however, allowing passenger trains to pass through the section, under limited speed restrictions and strict supervision,” read the statement.

Following the continued floods, Kenya Railway said there have also been delays in the departure and arrival of passenger trains at Mombasa Terminus, as safety measures are being put in place.
Meanwhile as the rains continue to pound several parts of the country, the coastal region has had several houses submerged and roads rendered impassable after the floods wreaked havoc.
The heavy rains experienced in the Country has likewise halted most transportations in Mombasa County.
