A Human Rights Defender in Makueni has raised stringent demands on the governor of Makueni County to justify his academic credentials. Justus Mutuku penned the letter to the IEBC Elections Manager for Makueni demanding information on Governor Mutula Kilonzo revolving around his academic achievements.
The letter dated October 22, 2024, also copied to the Commission on Administrative Justice (OMBUDSMAN) stated in part, “In the matter of access to information Act. 2016, (ATI) Part II, 4 and 5. I am a resident of Makueni County and a voter who participated in the 2022 general elections.
“Mutula Kilonzo junior (MKJ) presented to your office his academic particulars and subsequently cleared to vie for the said election in accordance with The Elections Act No. 24 of 2011,” the latter read in part.
Further, the letter cited that it has emerged that the one Mwengi Mutuse, the member of parliament, Kibwezi West has raised serious allegations against the academic qualifications of the governor through social media platforms.

In the posts, Mutuse alleged that the governor attained a D plain in his KCSE even after repeating form four (4).
Mutula Enrollment into a Bachelor of Law Degree
Following, this dismal performance, the letter claims that the governor could not have attained the minimum requirements for one to enrol in a bachelor of Law degree (LL.B) in Kenya.
He further went on to allege that Kilonzo attended an institution that, in his utterances, cannot be recognized by the Education system in our country.
As a highly spirited human rights defender in Makueni County, I found that the allegations are serious, especially being uttered by a sitting member of parliament.
In addition, the same letter outlined that the allegations have raised concerns among the people of Makueni County and have become a subject of debate.
Moreover, the letter emphasized that the allegations cannot be taken lightly, and the desire of the people of Makueni County to get the facts supersedes the lurid stories flying about social media platforms.

“To get the rock-hard facts, it is my humble request that you provide me with the above information as requested under the strength of Article 35 of the constitution of Kenya,” the letter urged.
Further, the letter reiterated that it’s an urgent matter requiring a response within three working days upon reception of the letter so that it may serve a pressing intended purpose regarding the allegations.
Further, Mutuku warned that failure to respond appropriately may generate litigation in the court.
