A Kenyan teacher has been nominated for the Ksh 29 million Global Teacher Award.
Orina Dominic has been selected among those who will represent Africa in the global award. He is part of the 50 selected from over 5,000 nominations and applications from 89 countries around the world.
Orina is a teacher at Kugerwet Primary School in Konion Constituency, Bomet County. He has been featured for his work with the 4K Club at the school that has taken the country by storm.
Orina’s outstanding work
With the introduction of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Orina saw an opportunity to put into practice his experience in innovative farming, which is currently generating income for the school.

The club began growing vegetables and fruits and later began to rear rabbits. The rabbits generate manure for the vegetables as the plants are grown organically. The pupils grow amaranthus, spinach, capsicum, Sukuma Wiki, and vegetables.
Orina, who has been posting his work on social media has been recognized in different spaces. He was recognized as the best innovative teacher in CBC in the Cheptalal zone.
Kenyan Teacher Wins Global Award
This is the second time a Kenyan has been nominated for the award. In 2019, Mwalimu Peter Tabichi, a Kenyan Science Teacher, was nominated for the award and won.

Tabichi transformed the lives of 480 students at Keriko Mixed Secondary School in Nakuru County with only one computer. Through his mentorship, students at the school were able to come up with an invention that allows deaf blind and deaf people to measure objects. This invention saw the school become the best Nationally at the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair in 2018.
Global Teacher Awards
He was recognized for his impact at the school where he donates 80 percent of his salary to help needy students.
The Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Award is aimed at recognizing the exceptional work of teachers and also serves to recognize the role of teachers in society.
Other nominees from Africa include. Ali Alfred Mokgalaka of South Africa, Faith Aku Dzakpasu from Ghana, Kayode Adewale from Nigeria, Mahamba Sebastian Ihonde from Tanzania, Stella Gyimaah Larbi from Ghana, and Tionge Mtambo from Malawi.
