Kenyan veteran journalist and British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) news editor Ruth Nesoba has announced her departure from the BBC media after nearly 20 years.
In a heartfelt message on her LinkedIn account on Sunday, May 25, 2025, the veteran journalist revealed that she is embarking on a new journey following her exit.
“After close to two decades, it’s time to hang up my trusted editor’s hat at the BBC and embark on a new journey.
While reflecting on her time at the BBC, Ruth Nesoba expressed gratitude for the friendships she built, the lessons learned, and the unforgettable experiences shared with colleagues and partners.
“From coordinating dynamic news deployments across the region to working alongside some of the most talented journalists and storytellers in the world, every moment at the BBC has been a masterclass in resilience, creativity, and teamwork. Together, we covered stories that mattered, pushed boundaries, and celebrated the power of journalism,” read part of her statement.
Ruth Nesoba Leaves BBC After 19 Years
At the same time, Nesoba revealed that she will take a short break to recharge. She is excited to join another organization in June 2025, where she will focus on leading teams to bring Africa’s stories to life through powerful visuals.
Following her exit from the British-owned media company, colleagues from the media industry sent congratulatory messages for her service there.

Senior Sports Journalist at BBC Africa, Celestine Karoney, said, “All the best in your new chapter dear Ruth and thank you for being such a great leader. We will dearly miss you. You will definitely excel in your next stop because of who you are, and they are lucky to have you.”
Business journalist at Bloomberg, Ramah Nyang, said, “All the best in the next chapter.”
Nesoba’s Education Background
During her time at the BBC, Ruth served in various roles. She worked as Regional News Editor for BBC World Service, News Diary and Planning Editor for East Africa, and Producer for BBC Africa.
In addition to her work at the BBC, Ruth had stints at notable media houses in Kenya, including KBC and Nation Media Group (NMG).

Ruth Nesoba holds a Master of Arts in Language Interpretation and Translation from the University of Nairobi, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Media Studies from the same institution.
She also holds a Diploma in Mass Media Communication (TV & Radio Production) from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication and a Diploma in Purchasing, Procurement/Acquisitions, and Contracts Management from Kenya College of Communication Technology (KCCT).
The departure of Ruth Nesoba comes months after another Kenyan journalist Ian Wafula left his role as BBC Africa Security Correspondent after nearly two years on February 3, 2025.
