Kenyans have criticized political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi for claiming that the Occupy Parliament demonstrations are funded by foreign entities.
The protests were organized to oppose the proposed tax measures in the Finance Bill, 2024, which many Kenyans believe are punitive.
In a statement on X, Ngunyi stated that the protests are not organic and that someone is trying to destabilize the country.
“Dear MPs: have you considered that a foreign power, unhappy with Ruto wants to occupy parliament? this protest against finance bill 2024 is not organic,” Ngunyi wrote.
“Telephone numbers etc. someone wants to destabilize Kenya and create an Arab spring! and our foolish children are toys.”
Following the remarks by the political activist, Kenyans online advised Ngunyi to stop “propaganda and conspiracy theories”, stating that protests are the people’s revolution sponsored by the citizens.
They stated that the protest is driven by genuine grievances of Kenyans and not some foreign conspiracy and accused Ngunyi of dismissing their legitimate concerns as manipulation that portrays a deep disconnect from the reality on the ground.
“Millennials at it once again. Instead of looking and dealing with real issues kenyans are facing you choose to view the situation this way,” an X user Sholla Ard said.
Another user noted that Ngunyi is trying to be relevant again but unfortunately the generation Z (Gen Z) can’t relate to his conspiracy theories as no one listens to his rubbish these days.
Kenyans Slam Mutahi Ngunyi Over His Remarks
“And what you forget is you were the political analyst our parents listened to. We are the new wave and you’re unpalatable to us. Use your theories to self-analyze and recollect as a Kenyan, a man and a student of history,” Kago Avin stated.
A user named Anwar Saddat noted, “Brother it’s Kenyans not happy with the Finance Bill 2024, not foreigners. But you wouldn’t know that because your stomach is empty and as they say: an empty stomach has no ears! Sometimes I am embarrassed on your behalf”.
Some argued that Kenya is the last country Ngunyi would expect the West to try and destabilize, alleging that it is the only remaining loyal ally of the west.
Furthermore, they accused the government of changing the narrative after initially blaming former President Uhuru Kenyatta for financing and sabotaging KK government and now the foreigners.
“Blames on Uhuru, Raila, Azimio and other stories are not tangible anymore. But a failed state must find something to cling on, something to blame even if it is not existing. What does Arab have to do with the pain Kenyans are experiencing on this finance bill?” Igunza Mwanatunzi posed.

Another user Jake stated, “Stop looking for foreigners that don’t exist. You can’t fool people forever. When you’re broke, stop building houses that nobody asked you to build and creating illegal positions and giving churches billions”.
Occupy Parliament Protests
Meanwhile, Kenyans have organized a second round of protests on Thursday, June 20, in Nairobi’s CBD at a time lawmakers are expected to vote in the afternoon on the Finance Committee’s report during the second reading of the Bill.
In response to the protests, President William Ruto acknowledged that every Kenyan has the right to protest but maintained that the ongoing demonstrations will not hinder his government’s decision-making.
“Civil society is free to do what they want to do; those who want to demonstrate, they can demonstrate, it is their right, no problem, but decisions have to be made by institutions,” Ruto said earlier.
