Kenyans on social media expressed mixed reactions after nominated senator Karen Nyamu posted an image of her dancing with Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua at a wedding held on Saturday, 19th November.
The wedding that made headlines involved two Members of Parliament allied to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi and Murang’a County Woman Representative Betty Maina.
The two MPs got married in a traditional ceremony ‘Ruracio’ which was attended by political bigwigs in the country including President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
As such, photos of the wedding surfaced online, showing a rare sight of notable politicians having fun and dancing the day away.

However, when nominated senator Karen Nyamu posted a photo of her dancing with the deputy president to a traditional song with the caption ‘meri na kuna‘, on her official X account Kenyans were quick to react.
Notably, the caption to the photo ‘meri na kuna’ are the lyrics to a popular Kikuyu ‘mwomboko’ song that is sung during Kikuyu ceremonies such as weddings.
In the photo, the two politicians are wearing brown attire, which was designed to mimic traditional Kikuyu regalia.
The photo that displayed a seemingly harmless image of the two politicians enjoying the music became a source of major controversy on social media.
Kenyans were quick to criticize Karen Nyamu for posting the photo, some of them descending on her with harsh criticism.

Netizens Rope in Samidoh
Of note, Karen Nyamu has graced headlines constantly due to her affair with popular Kikuyu Benga musician and police officer, Samidoh.
Therefore, when the controversial photo surfaced, Kenyans were quick to rope in Samidoh into the mix.
One X user, Wesley Kibande chose to quote the Holy Bible on the issue, drawing a mischievous similarity between the photo with a popular Bible story.
“2 Samuel 11:1–5. Bonjour Haiti, here we come,” Wesley Kibande posted.
The story depicted in 2nd Samuel 11 is the story of the Israelite King David who sent Uriah to the battlefield so that he could marry Uriah’s wife, Bathsheba.
However, it was not all doom and gloom in the comment section.
Other netizens came in appreciating the dress code at the wedding as well as defending the two politicians from online critics.

For instance, one X user Hexagon while reacting to the photo wrote,” Looking great.”
Nevertheless, some Kenyans came to Karen Nyamu‘s defense, bashing the netizens that had chosen to react negatively to the senator and the DP, noting the body language of the dance was respectful and friendly.
“Respect to the man, showing respect to his spouse and Karen Nyamu’s spouse,” user Nahashon Levi posted.
