The Chairperson of the Presidential Council of Economic Advisors David Ndii has sparked reactions among Kenyans online after sharing an image of a Ksh199 maize meal being sold in a supermarket.
From Ndii’s post, it indicated that maize flour, branded ‘Tupike” was on offer across the country until the following week.
Additionally, the advertisement, originally posted by one of the leading supermarket chains in the country Naivas, detailed that the price of the flour had dropped by Ksh25, while on offer.
The original price of the commodity however is Ksh144.
“The common question in the kitchen is usually ‘what do we cook?’ Cook Tupike flour which is now on offer at a Naivas Supermarket near you,” the supermarket chains indicated in the post.

Ndii Sparks Mixed Reactions from Kenyans
In response to the post, users on X were happy to know that the price of the maize flour had reduced.
However, others quickly corrected that it was only a promotional offer by Naivas Supermarket.
Joel Mulwa hailed Ndii saying that his advice to the government was working and that prices of the commodity was reducing.
At the same time, Edgar Wabwire responded to Ndii saying that he should not be celebrating over promotions.

“You’re celebrating Unga prices going down and it’s on promotion.
“This energy you use on propaganda can be utilized in the gym for you to unfat,” he said.

KNBS on Commodities Whose Prices Have Reduced
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) on February 28, released a list of essential items whose prices recorded an increase and decrease in February 2024.
According to the report, the annual inflation rate as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) decreased by 0.5 per cent from 6.9 per cent to 6.3 per cent in February.
The prices of nine selected items decreased while those of six other selected items increased.
Items including a kilogram of kale (Sukuma wiki) and a kilogram of spinach increased by 3.4 per cent and 3.9 per cent respectively.
Other food items whose prices increased include wheat flour (2kg), non-aromatic rice (2kg), potatoes (1kg) and beef (1kg).
KNBS stated that prices of carrots (1kg), fresh packet milk (500ml), beans (1kg), maize grain (1kg) and sugar (1kg) decreased at 0.4, 0.2, 0.6, 3.4 and 4.6 per cent respectively.
