The Ministry of Health (MOH) has alerted the public to be cautious of fake social media accounts that are impersonating the newly appointed Health Cabinet Secretary (CS), Deborah Barasa Mulongo.
In a statement issued on August 11, the MOH specifically pointed out a fraudulent X account, @Deborah_Mulongo, which is falsely claiming to represent CS Deborah Barasa.
The ministry cautioned that this account is spreading misinformation and is not affiliated with official government communication.
“ALERT: A fake X account, @Deborah_Mulongo, is falsely posing as the Cabinet Secretary for Health and spreading misinformation. Please be aware this is not the official account,” said MOH.
To ensure accurate information is received, the MOH urged the public to follow the official account, @deborabarasa, which they pointed out was the legitimate source for updates from the CS.
Kenyans Urged to Report the Fake Accounts
“The legitimate account is @deborabarasa. Follow the official account for accurate and timely updates,” noted the statement.
The Ministry concluded the statement by urging the public to stay alert and clear of any other fraudulent accounts they come across.
A spot check by The Kenya Times established that the account flagged by MOH for operating under the CS’s name boasted a significant following of 4k followers.
However, a closer look at the account’s bio section reveals that the page was created in March 2020, a contrast to the legitimate account which was created in July 2012.
Additionally, the flagged account has made several posts highlighting the day-to-day duties of Debora Barasa even engaging with other state officials and agencies.

Deborah Barasa Officially Takes Office
This development follows Deborah Barasa’s official appointment as the new Cabinet Secretary for Health, which was finalized after a rigorous vetting process.
She was sworn in on August 8, 2024, along with all other cabinet nominees, taking on a critical role in the government’s health sector.

Barasa’s appointment came in the wake of President William Ruto’s Cabinet reshuffle on July 11, 2024, during which several officials were dismissed.
This reshuffle aimed to enhance government efficiency and accountability, allowing for fresh leadership to address the pressing challenges facing the nation.
With her new position, Barasa is expected to lead initiatives that will improve public health services and communication across the country.
