Kenyatta University (KU) on Wednesday, June 5 sought to clarify its policy regarding students keeping motor vehicles on campus.
In a response to The Kenya Times, KU clarified that the regulations primarily concern the parking of vehicles on university premises rather than outright ownership restrictions.
“We would like to clarify the Motor Vehicle policy issue: Note this is not about owning a car but rather the aspect of leaving the car at the university case in point ‘May Not Keep a Motor Vehicle on University Premises’,” KU said.
As per the statement, students will not be allowed to leave their vehicles around the hostels and residential areas.
“This goes without saying because even in areas of residence they do not allow vehicles that are not known to be kept in the premises,” added the institution.
Kenyatta University Motor Vehicle Policy
The institution said that students are not permitted to keep motor vehicles on university premises for several important reasons.
This includes crime Prevention where the institution said restricting vehicle storage helps avert potential crimes such as the concealment of stolen vehicles on campus.
“Maintaining Order: It ensures there is law and order regarding student property. Unauthorized vehicles can lead to congestion and difficulties in managing campus security,” added the institution.
Additionally, KU said the rule was enacted for liability concerns since in the event of any incidents involving vehicles kept on campus, determining liability can be challenging.
“Kindly note that this has been there for so long and the students from previous years have all adhered to this rule,” added the institution.
