The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has revealed details of the suspect linked to the brutal killing of a patient Edward Maingi Ndegwa, which occurred on Thursday July 17, 2025.
In a statement on Friday, July 18, KNH said Kennedy Kalombotole, the suspect, was a former long-term patient with no known identity or relatives.
According to the hospital, Kalombotole had been previously admitted to the ICU in November 2022 and later moved to the general ward.
Despite being discharged, the man—believed to be homeless and unidentified—remained within the hospital premises due to the lack of an alternative home and ongoing coordination with investigative agencies.
“The suspect, who was a long-term patient of the Hospital, had previously been admitted in November 2022 into ICU, and subsequently discharged to the general ward,” KNH said.
KNH Reveals Details of Suspect Who Killed Patient Inside Ward
KNH stated that being a homeless person with no known relatives nor proven identity, he stayed on in the Hospital even as the hospital made several attempts to identify him through fingerprint identification and also through our social media pages.
The hospital said it had attempted to place him in a care facility in 2024, but after his readmission in December and discharge in January 2025, the home refused to take him back.
“In June 2024, the Hospital was able to secure a home where the suspect was discharged too. However, he fell ill in December 2024 and was readmitted to KNH and discharged in January 2025,” KNH stated.
“Upon discharge, the home that previously hosted him declined to take him back for unknown reasons. In the interim the suspect remained in KNH as we tried to look for alternative accommodation.”

According to KNH the deceased had been admitted to Ward 7B on July 11, 2025. On July 17, 2025, during patient visiting hours, he was visited by a relative, who spent time with him before leaving the ward shortly before 2:00 PM.
Immediately after visiting hours, the patient was discovered unresponsive in his hospital bed.
KNH revealed that a medical staff who responded to the emergency noted that he had sustained a deep cut to his neck.
“Further examination revealed that he had passed away,” KNH added.
“The Hospital activated its emergency protocol, promptly notified the patient’s next of kin and escalated the matter without delay to law enforcement agencies.”

Slippers, Knife, and Blood-Stained Sheet Link Suspect to Patient Killing
A multi-agency team of investigating officers arrived at the facility shortly after and launched investigations, that led into the arrest of the suspect.
Upon visiting the scene, detectives noted bloody slipper prints leading from the victim’s bedside to a nearby toilet and eventually to a side room, where the suspect, Kalombotole, was admitted.
In the room, investigators recovered a pair of blue slippers and a blood-stained bedsheet. On the ground outside, directly beneath the window of the deceased’s ward on the 7th floor, they also recovered a knife wrapped in gloves.
These items were forwarded to the National Forensic Laboratory for detailed forensic analysis to support the case.
Kalombotole is also being treated as the prime suspect in the murder of 40-year-old Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni, who was killed in Ward 7C during the night of February 6–7, 2025.
