The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has revealed some of the country’s most sought-after degree programs based on applications received during the 2026 placement cycle.
According to KUCCPS CEO Agnes Wahome, 108,858 students applied for various courses through the placement service.
Of the total applications, 6,500 were for the Bachelor of Medicine, against a capacity of 702.
“So, in total we had about 6,500 students applying for medicine, against a capacity of 702. So, the question is, how then do we determine who gets medicine?” Agnes Wahome questioned during the KUCCPS stakeholder forum on July 8.
The KUCCPS CEO further noted that, despite students scoring mean grades of A and A-, the placement service could not accommodate all students due to the limited capacity of 702.
Medicine Degree Courses Application
Out of the candidates who sat their KCSE in 2025 and applied for the medicine degree courses: 1,525 had scored an A plain grade, while 1,900 had scored an A grade.
KUCCPS used cluster subjects, including mathematics, chemistry, biology, and a language, to determine placement.
In addition to using the cluster subjects, the placement service used the cluster weights and cut-off points depending on the placement universities.
Despite the high number of students applying for medicine courses, the placement service noted an increase in the number of students qualifying for university placement in 2026.

KUCCPS on Education, Law, and Hospitality Courses
Besides the medicine course, Agnes Wahome said that education courses take up most of the placements every year.
“Education courses form the bulk of our placements every year, and it is important that we align our training with the demand both locally and international market demands,” Agnes Wahome stated.
On his part, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Migos Ogamba, stated that Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) placed 875 students.
In addition, the CS added that the placement service has placed 500 applicants to the Diploma in Law and 765 at the Kenya Utalii College for hospitality courses.
“500 applicants have been placed to the Diploma in Law (paralegal studies) offered at the Kenya School of Law, while 765 were placed to the Kenya Utalii College and 875 in Secondary TTC programs,” CS Ogamba outlined.
