A Police Constable succumbed to a gunshot wound after he was shot dead in Thika West sub-county Kiambu County.
Police Constable Bernard Koome, who is attached to the Special Police Intercept and Verification SPIV unit was fatally injured during a routine security patrol in the Cravers area on Tuesday June 17, 2025. Koome was shot after a routine inspection of motorcycles turned violent.
According to eyewitnesses, the police constable had gone on a routine patrol, accompanied by three colleagues. The officers stopped a rider whose motorcycle did not display the unique registration code required for Boda Boda operators in Thika town.
Police Officer Shot by Boda Boda Rider
When one of the officers went for the ignition key of the motorcycle, an argument broke out between the officer and the rider.
While Koome was trying to intercept the motorcycle from the Boda Boda Rider, the rider managed to overpower the police constable, seized a firearm, and shot him in the neck.
As the other officers scrambled for cover, the attacker fled before they could respond. He then hijacked a passing motorcycle carrying a passenger near the Royal Hotel and sped away.

According to police reports, the suspect dropped a loaded magazine at the scene, which forensic investigators later recovered.
“In the process, he shot PC Bernard Koome in the neck. Officers pursued the suspect, who continued firing into the air while fleeing,” police stated.
Officers Attacked in Nakuru
Police later did a follow-up search of the area which resulted in the discovery of two spent 9mm cartridges as well as a CZ pistol magazine containing four rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Currently, authorities have initiated a manhunt for the suspect. This incident follows a similar attack that occurred on June 1, 2025, in Nakuru County, where an officer from Bondeni Police Station was killed and two others injured during an ambush by an armed gang in the Free Area.

The officers were on foot patrol when the attackers opened fire. Nakuru County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara reported that five suspects were arrested, and an AK-47 rifle was recovered. The injured officers were treated at Nakuru Level Five Hospital.
“On the night of June 1st, 2025, the robbers ambushed and opened fire at police officers on foot patrol, killing one and injuring two. The injured officers are still receiving treatment,” Kibaara said.
