The Standard Group has revealed details of the last moments of its senior education journalist the late Shadrack Mitty who died on Wednesday, May 29, while undergoing treatment in hospital.
According to the Standard Group, Mitty complained of severe body pains prior to being rushed to the Kenya University Teaching Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH).

“We have tried to resuscitate him twice, but the heart did not respond on the third attempt,” said a medic before Mitty was pronounced dead.
According to the company, Mitty was rushed to KUTRRH on Tuesday after his conditions worsened following complains of body pains which he had experienced for a month.

Upon assessing him, the doctors advised his relatives to take him home pending a Thursday May 30, appointment with a cardiologist.
“He had been taken to KUTRRH on Tuesday, but he was sent back home after the hospital assessed him and advised his relatives to wait for a Thursday (today) appointment with a cardiologist.”

In addition, the firm revealed that he was treated, put on medication and later resumed work.
Unfortunately, the condition recurred, and the journalist was admitted to a city hospital where he was diagnosed with a defective heart valve.
Heart Condition
Cleveland Clinic defines heart valve disease as “any of several conditions that prevent one or more of the valves in your heart from working right. Left untreated, heart valve disease can cause your heart to work harder.”

According to his relatives, Mitty was scheduled for a review by a team of cardiologists to determine whether he should undergo a corrective heart surgery.
Sadly, he breathed his last on Tuesday, May 28, and is survived by his wife and eight-year-old daughter.
Shadrack Mitty worked as a reporter at Nation Media Group (NMG) having served at QTV from September 17, 2012, to June 30, 2016.
Prior to that, he was also a journalist with the Kenya News Agency (KNA) from June 2008 to September 2010.
Shadrack pursued a course in Film and Video Production at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication – KIMC, in Nairobi’s South B.

Friends and colleagues described him as an accomplished and humble education reporter with an excellent work ethic.

ODM Communication Director Phillip Etale mourned Mitty, praising him as a dedicated journalist who had a deep passion for his work.
“Waking up to the sad news of the passing on of my friend and colleague in journalism Shadrack Mitty This was one journalist who loved his job. He was dedicated and never shied from asking as many questions as possible to understand the story for informed dissemination to the masses. The media industry has lost a good man,” Philip said.
KTN News deputy editor, Ken Mijungu described him as friendly team member and a good man.
“His dedication was unquestionable, his professionalism unrivaled. A friendly team member whose contacts in the education sector made all the difference in our work. He was a good man a perfect gentleman,” Mijungu said.
On his part, The Kenya Times Editor-in-Chief Ken Aseka described the late Mitty as a dependable and professional journalist who had immense passion for education.
“Shadrack was a disciplined journalist and team player. The Standard Group and the Media fraternity are poorer without Shadrack Mitty. Fare thee Well. My thoughts and prayers are with Shadrack’s family and friends,” he said.
