List of Buildings to Be Repainted in Nairobi After Sakaja’s Orders

The Nairobi County Government, through the Office of Urban and Development Planning, has issued an order requiring specific buildings within Nairobi to be repainted.

In a notice dated January 20, 2025, the County Government stated that the listed buildings must be repainted with a fresh coat of paint and have new security lights installed, or existing ones repaired.

“Pursuant to the Physical and Land Use Planning Act No. 13 (2019), the Urban Areas and Cities (Amendment) Act (2019), and the Public Health Act (2012), the County Government of Nairobi hereby issues the following public notice, which must be complied with as indicated below,” the notice read in part. 

All owners, tenants, and property management agents of buildings within the following areas are directed to repaint their buildings with a fresh coat of paint and install new or repair existing security lights.

Areas Affected by the Nairobi County Government Directive

According to the notice, the following areas will be affected by the directive;

  1. Central Business District (CBD): Buildings within the area defined by Uhuru Highway, Haile Selassie Avenue, University Way, and Kirinyaga Road.
  2. Westlands Shopping Center Area: All buildings in this zone.
  3. Upper Hill District: Buildings within this area.
  4. Ngara: Buildings in and around the Ngara area.

The County Government emphasized that the order would take effect immediately, starting Monday, January 20, 2025.

The directive will lapse after 90 days, after which the County Government will begin legal enforcement against those who fail to repaint their buildings and provide security lighting for their premises.

This announcement follows Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s statement during a church service on Sunday, January 19, 2025, urging all landlords to repaint their buildings within 90 days.

“To everyone who owns a building in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), we are issuing a circular tomorrow directing that all these buildings must be repainted in 90 days. In the same period, we will work on restoring roads within Nairobi,” said the Governor.

Directive for Matatu Owners

Meanwhile, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria issued a notice to matatu owners regarding stage management, emphasizing cleanliness and orderliness in public spaces.

The notice outlined four key directives:

  1. Stage Management During Non-Operational Hours: Matatu owners must ensure stages are vacated during cleaning hours to allow county environment staff to clean effectively.
  2. Waste Management: Owners are required to manage waste at their stages, either by providing waste collection services or ensuring waste is handed over to licensed waste service providers.
  3. Noise and Nuisance Control: A strict directive prohibits unnecessary hooting and loud music, which contribute to noise pollution in the city.
  4. Immediate Enforcement: All directives are to be implemented immediately, emphasizing the urgency of maintaining a cleaner and more organized city.
