A man accused of breaking into his mother’s bar and stealing beer in Eldoret was found dead at the basement holding cells of the Eldoret Law Courts on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
Turbo Sub County police commander Patrick Wekesa said the suspect, identified as Collins Cheruiyot killed himself after his failing to convince his mother to withdraw the case against him.

The 24-year-old is alleged to have hanged himself using his sweater and laces of his pants.
“Before committing suicide in the cell, he had called his mother pleading with her to come to court to withdraw the matter, in vain,” an inmate at the cell said.

Wekesa said Cheruiyot hanged himself after making a futile call to his mother as he pleaded with her to come and secure his release.
He explained that efforts by court orderlies and other inmates to rescue him were futile as he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).

“We received information that while in a holding cell, where he was alone, he removed the trouser lace and tied it to the window grills. Other inmates realized that something was amiss when the convict went silent and when they went to the cell, they found him jerking on the rope. They removed him and rushed him to MTRH where he was pronounced dead while undergoing resuscitation,” Wekesa said.

The charge sheet alleges that on May 24, 2024, he broke into Round Point Bar intending to steal.
Cheruiyot first pleaded guilty to the theft charge on May 27, 2024, before later changing his plea to not guilty.
Reports indicate that the deceased pleaded with her mother for forgiveness and asked the court for time to withdraw the case.
However, her mother repeatedly refused, leading to multiple adjournments as he persisted.
