The family of former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta is in mourning after the death of their son and brother William Gakuo.
The 48-year-old passed on November 6, 2024, although the family has not yet revealed the cause of his death.
In an obituary published in one of the local dailies, the family announced his death while expressing grief.
“It is with deep sorrow and humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce the passing of William Gakuo. Gakuo was the husband of Sheila Wanjiku Mwangi, and brother to Gabriela, Maina, Anna, Christine, Margaret, and Uhuru,” read the obituary.

He was the uncle of the late Noni, Jomo and Achola, Lana and Budisa, Ngina and Alex, Muhoho, and Chizi Gulka,” part of the obituary read.
According to the obituary, friends and family will be meeting at Maina’s home in Karen on Saturday, November 9, 2024, and Sunday, November 10, 2024, at 4.00 pm.
The funeral service for the late William Gakuo will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 10:00 am at the Hindu Crematorium Karlokor, followed by cremation.

A section of Kenyans have sent messages of condolences to the Kenyatta family following his demise.
Social media influencer Abuga Makori said, “My condolences to former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta for the loss of your brother William Gakuo.”
Another social media user, Duncan Ddung’u said, “May his soul rest in peace.”
Margaret Kenyatta, known for maintaining a low profile, has kept much of her family life away from the public eye.
Despite this, many Kenyans recognize her connection to the prominent Gakuo family, a name that belonged to her late father, Dr. Ephantus Njuguna Gakuo.

Ephantus Njuguna Gakuo was a notable figure in Kenya’s history. He made significant contributions to the country’s development.
In 1964, he became the first African managing director of the Kenya Railways Corporation succeeding GPG Mackay.
Gakuo earned his PhD in Economics from Freiburg University in Germany in 1960 and briefly taught there before returning to Kenya.

He also taught African studies at Delhi University after completing his BA and MA degrees in Commerce from the Delhi School of Business in 1955.
Dr. Gakuo was instrumental in modernizing Kenya Railways, securing substantial funding from the World Bank and other sources to enhance infrastructure and transition from steam to diesel locomotives. He died in August 2005.
