Chief Justice (CJ) Martha Koome has mourned the death of Dr. Wilfred Mutubwa.
In a statement on November 27, Koome sent condolences to his to the family, friends, and colleagues on behalf of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Mutubwa’s family, friends, colleagues and the entire Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) fraternity during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Koome said.
Koome said Dr. Mutubwa was renowned as a leading advocate for the multi-door approach to the delivery of justice in Kenya.
Koome Praised Mutubwa’s Contribution
The CJ said Mutubwa’s championing of arbitration and mediation as preferred methods of dispute resolution was instrumental in shaping these practices within the justice sector, bringing justice closer to the people.
She mourned him as a celebrated legal practitioner and member of the legal academy in Kenya and beyond
“Dr. Mutubwa will be remembered for his personable approach to dispute resolution, his love and respect for the law and his innovative approach to work,” Koome said.
“Kenya and Africa have lost a legal luminary whose work will continue to inspire many generations to come.”
LSK Sends Condolences
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) described Mutubwa as an accomplished mediator and arbitrator with over 18 years of experience.
LSK said he would be remembered for his efforts in strengthening the partnership between the Branch and CIARB.
“His colleagues remember him as a great academician, lively, fearless, adventurous, fun-loving, kind, and hardworking,” LSK said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult period.”

Faith Odhiambo
LSK President Faith Odhiambo said the legal profession has lost a distinguished member.
Odhiambo said Mutubwa earned a place as a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague and led ground-breaking efforts in enhancing the place of Arbitration in Kenya’s justice system.

Dr. Mutubwa Career
Mutubwa served as the Vice-Chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), a Member of the Judiciary’s Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce and a champion of Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Dr. Mutubwa was appointed by the Judicial Service Commission as a member of the PPDT in September 2021 following a competitive recruitment process.
He was thereafter elected by the PPDT members to be their Vice-chairperson. Among his notable achievements was overseeing the Kisumu PPDT Bench during the 2022 pre-election dispute resolution phase.
He steered the process with the utmost professionalism, diligence, dedication and fairness hallmarks that marked his successful career.

He was also the Chairman Emeritus of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators – Kenya Branch.
Mutubwa is a Founding Principal at Dr. Mutubwa Law Advocates and was recognized as the 2nd Runner-Up for Lawyer of the Year at the recently held Nairobi Legal Awards.
Furthermore, he was awarded ADR Practitioner of the Year in 2023 by the Nairobi Legal Awards Trust.
Mutubwa served briefly as the Dean at the Mount Kenya University School of Law.
