First Lady Melania Trump is stepping into an unusually high-profile diplomatic role as her husband’s administration conducts military strikes against Iran, preparing to chair a session of the United Nations Security Council in New York.
Melania is set to make history Monday, 2nd March as the first-ever presidential spouse to chair a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Her unprecedented role comes just days after her husband, President Donald Trump, launched Operation Epic Fury in Iran, which resulted in the deaths of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and dozens of top Iranian officials. Four American service members have also been confirmed dead in the operation.
According to the president, in a Sunday interview with the Daily Mail, the military operation is proceeding ahead of schedule and is expected to last about four weeks. President Trump described the strikes as highly effective, asserting that the U.S. military is achieving its objectives swiftly.

Meanwhile, Melania Trump is preparing to emphasize the role of education in advancing tolerance and world peace. A media release from the First Lady’s office outlined that her UNSC session, scheduled for Monday afternoon at the UN headquarters in New York City, will focus on children, technology, and education in conflict zones. She has not publicly commented on her husband’s recent military actions in Iran.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric confirmed that this will be the first time a First Lady, or First Gentleman, has presided over a Security Council meeting. President Trump’s UN ambassador, Mike Waltz, who serves as the UNSC president for March, will formally hold the post, while Melania chairs the discussion on the designated issues.
Over the weekend, Ambassador Waltz defended U.S. actions in Iran during an emergency Security Council session, rejecting claims that the military strikes were inconsistent with international law. Waltz called such assertions “ridiculous and frankly farcical,” underscoring the administration’s position on the legality of the operations.
Melania Trump’s focus on education and children in conflict has been a longstanding priority. In the past, she has highlighted the impact of war on children, including a personal letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin during her husband’s peace summit last August. In that letter, she urged the protection of children worldwide and emphasized their shared hopes for safety, love, and opportunity.
Her planned UNSC session will explore the intersection of technology and education in conflict zones, aiming to address the unique challenges that children face in war-torn regions. Officials noted that the session could set a precedent for future involvement of First Ladies or other presidential spouses in international diplomacy.

Public response to the Trump administration’s military actions has been mixed. A Reuters/Ipsos poll published Sunday found that only 27 percent of American adults approve of the strikes, while 43 percent disapprove and 29 percent remain undecided.
The survey also indicated that roughly half of Americans believe the president is too willing to deploy military force, with 56 percent considering his readiness to use power excessive.
The Trump administration has stressed the operation’s strategic importance and the need for rapid, decisive action. President Trump and First Lady Melania previously visited the UN together in September 2025 for the 80th General Assembly, an event that drew both media attention and public scrutiny. During that visit, Melania navigated a brief technical mishap on an escalator, an incident the president later joked about publicly.
