Moi University has clarified the letter taking rounds on social media purporting that the Vice Chancelor (VC) Isaac Kosgey has been suspended.
In a statement on Thursday, November 28, Moi University flagged the poster as ‘fake’. The fake poster alleged that the Moi University Council had suspended the VC, Isaac Kosgey with immediate effect.
“The Moi University Council wishes to inform all staff and the public that Prof. Isaac S. Kosgey has been suspended as Vice-Chancellor with immediate effect,” part of the statement read.
According to the letter, Kosgey had been suspended following an investigation being conducted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on the embezzlement of funds within the university.

Moi University has been facing numerous challenges, including accusations of embezzlement of funds. This situation has led to delays in staff payments, resulting in a paralysis of learning within the institution.
Recently, Kosgey was summoned by EACC for questioning on November 18, 2024. This inquiry pertains to allegations of corruption involving KSh 2.2 billion linked to fraudulent infrastructure projects at the university.
The investigation is part of a wider initiative to tackle financial mismanagement and corruption within the institution, which has been facing significant debt and operational challenges.

In a four-page statement, Chairman Dr. Humphrey Kimani acknowledged that the university has faced significant financial and operational challenges that have tested its resilience and ability to maintain stability.
He explained that these troubles arose from a combination of reduced revenues, rising costs, and systemic changes in student sponsorship and enrollment.

For example, the reforms introduced in the 2016 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) had a profound impact on the university’s finances by phasing out self-sponsored programs, which left the institution heavily reliant on government-sponsored students.
“The major challenge at Moi University is inadequate finances, as the institution has struggled for the past decade to generate sufficient revenue to cover its expenditures,” Kimani stated.
