President William Ruto’s Senior Economic Advisor, Moses Kuria, has alleged that Kenya Prison Warden jobs were sold for Ksh50,000.
In a statement on June 5, Kuria said he received information that successful candidates paid a bribe to be selected during the recruitment exercise.
He criticized the action, terming it as immoral and unnecessary.
Kuria said those involved in the alleged bribery scandal have no place in heaven.
“I am getting disturbing reports that the candidates who were recruited for the Kenya Prison Wardens jobs paid a bribe of Ksh500K each. This is not good,” he said.
“It’s immoral. It’s not worth it. We will burn in hell. Selling prison warder jobs? Apana!”
Inspector General (IG) Douglas Kanja and Commissioner General of the Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) Patrick Aranduh had not responded to the claims by the time of publishing.
Kenyans Reacts to Moses Kuria Allegations
His allegations attracted mixed reactions from Kenyans on social media.
Politician Alinur Mohamed wondered why Kuria, who is a government is complaining on social media just like ordinary Kenyans.
“Yet a special government advisor with an office in the Statehouse is here complaining on social media just like the rest of us,” Mohamed said on X.
Others mentioned that bribery cut across all government jobs, not just in police recruitment.
“Such things are happening across the board and ought to be stopped,” a user named Voice.
Some X users also mentioned that government officials are selling Teacher Service Commission (TSC) appointment letters at an even more expensive price.
“That’s too small. It was 750k. TSC is 800 as we speak, things are moving so fast,” Eng. Bii Kipkorir said.
“It’s been happening we are being sold TSC forms at 300-500k it’s Kenya for us,” another user named Ken said.
X user Mkenya Daima told Kuria that paying for the police positions has been going on for a long.
He stated that the President’s Advisor is lagging behind in such matters.
“It’s been like that since time immemorial ,you’re the one who’s behind the syllabus, Mkenya Daima said.

Prison Constable Jobs
In April, KPS announced a mass recruitment exercise targeting constables, professional cadet officers, technicians, and artisans.
The exercise was conducted nationwide on April 30, 2025, at designated recruitment centres across all counties in Kenya.
In the advert, KPS said the recruitment exercise will be absolutely free.
It added that bribery and other acts of corruption are also unlawful.
Qualification of Prison Constables
Candidates wishing to join the KPS must meet the following conditions and possess academic qualifications
- Be a Kenyan Citizen.
- Must have a valid National Identity card.
- Have no criminal record.
- Have a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Minimum grade of D+ and above.
- Be between the ages of 18 and 28 years.
- At least 5 feet 4 inches tall for men and 5 feet 2 inches tall for women.
- Be physically and mentally fit.
- Must have good bearing and clear vision.
- Female candidates must not be pregnant at the time of recruitment or during the initial training period.
Candidates normally undergo paramilitary initial training lasting no less than nine months.

Duties of Kenya Prisons Constables
Kenya Prisons Constables play an important role in maintaining the security and functionality of correctional facilities across the country.
Their primary responsibilities include:
- Custody and Supervision of Inmates: They ensure the safety of all prisons and ensure they do not escape.
- Maintaining Security and Order: They maintain law and order within all government prisons and respond to any disturbances or emergencies.
- Escort Duties: Safely transporting inmates to courts, hospitals, or other facilities as required.
- Rehabilitation and Reformation: They also take part in rehabilitation and reformation programs for prisoners to facilitate their reintegration into society.
