Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has blamed Kenyans, led by People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, who had camped at Julius Nyerere International Airport for their deportation.
While speaking in a media interview on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the Prime Cabinet Secretary stated that to some extent, he agrees with what Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu said about Kenyans exporting bad behavior to Tanzania.
“Let’s face a few facts. The level of etiquette and insults that we see bandied in Kenya sometimes goes overboard. What President Suluhu is saying is a fact. Our approach and utterances sometimes lack serious integrity,” Mudavadi stated.
He further defended his sentiments, saying that the moment Kenyan citizens depart from their country, the law that applies to them is the law of their host country.
Mudavadi Defends Suluhu’s Actions
Additionally, the Prime Cabinet Secretary mentioned that if the deported Kenyans had permission from the Kenyan government while leaving for Tanzania, those who had gone there would not have been deported.
“Since there is sovereignty, a country can make certain decisions. It is our duty to find out what the circumstances were in detail and not necessarily rely on what comes through the media,” Mudavadi explained.

The Prime PS’s remarks come a day after Tanzanian President Suluhu defended her actions of deporting Kenyans who had gone to witness Opposition Leader Tundu Lisu’s trial.
“We have started to see the behavior of activists invading our affairs here. If they have been controlled, they should not come and destroy us here. The country that remains unspoiled is ours so that we do not give room to immoral people from other countries to come and disrupt here.” She further emphasized, “What I am doing is protecting my country, and that is the duty I have been given.”
The number of Kenyans who have been deported by Suluhu’s administration while trying to attend Tundu Lisu’s trial so far includes:
- Willy Mutunga, former Chief Justice of Kenya
- Hussein Khalid, CEO Vocal Africa
- Hanifa Adan, human rights activist
