Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has released a statement after the Gen Z-led memorial protests on June 25, 2025.
Murkomen said he assessed the situation in Nairobi, prioritizing a visit to small-scale traders affected by yesterday’s protests in the city.
In his statement, the CS stated that he was taken aback by the unfortunate incidents of violence that marred the protests.
Murkomen said the protests started peacefully, with protesters following the legal requirements before it was infiltrated by gangs.
“What began as a constitutionally protected expression of public concern was sadly hijacked by organized gangs. This kind of lawlessness not only undermines the spirit of our democracy but also causes unnecessary suffering for innocent Kenyans,” Murkomen said.
He said hundreds of traders have been affected, and businesses and livelihoods built through hard work and dedication have been lost.
Firearms Stolen
He condemned the criminal anarchists who in the name of peaceful demonstrations unleashed a wave of violence, looting, sexual assault, and destruction upon our people.
Murkomen said key government installations and offices were targeted, and at least nine police stations were attacked, five of which were torched, including Dagoretti, Molo and Ol Kalau.
Additionally, he said 88 police vehicles were destroyed, 27 national and county government vehicles destroyed, and 65 civilian vehicles parked in various police stations also burnt.
He said firearms were stolen in Dagoretti Police Post, Kiambu County, while four were burnt at Gachui Police Post.
“The criminals were aiming at the officers on duty. They were after guns in the armouries and police uniforms. Five firearms were stolen in Dagoretti Police Post, Kiambu County, while four were burnt at Gachui Police Post, by the very criminals who hid behind the pretence of a peaceful protest,” he said.
Govt Offices Targeted
Further, he said government offices including courts, National Government, County Offices and businesses worth billions of shillings, were massively looted.
He said the criminals targeted kiosks, supermarkets, electronic shops, hotels and restaurants, among others.
The CS said what happened was not spontaneous was not random stating that it was deliberate, coordinated, funded, premeditated and politically instigated.
Murkomen said the mobilized protestors along Kiambu and Thika roads were chanting “it is time to take over power” and “occupy State House”.
Murkomen Working to Restore Order
He said IG Douglas Kanja, through the Directorate of Criminal Investigations is carrying out investigations to apprehend and bring to justice the organisers and financiers of this well-orchestrated campaign of violence.
“Rest assured that the Government will pursue justice relentlessly on behalf of all affected Kenyans. No person will be spared regardless of their political or financial status,” he said.
