Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has ordered the immediate transfer of all police officers stationed at Keringet Police Station in Nakuru County as the government intensifies its crackdown on drug and substance abuse in the area.

Speaking during a public baraza in Keringet on Saturday, July 25, Murkomen said the move targets officers who have overstayed at the station and are alleged to have become complicit in alcohol abuse and other misconduct.

The CS said the affected officers would be removed from the station, enrolled in rehabilitation programmes where necessary, and subjected to disciplinary action. He also announced that 20 new officers would be deployed to replace them.

“All police officers who have been here for a long time and have been drinking will be taken to rehabilitation and disciplined. Twenty new police officers will be deployed here,” Murkomen said.

Murkomen further announced the deployment of a special police unit to lead an intensified operation against drug traffickers and other criminal networks operating in the area.

He said the government was determined to eliminate the drug trade in Keringet and would strengthen security operations to achieve that objective.

“We have agreed that a special team will be deployed here to decisively fight and eradicate drugs,” he said.

The Interior CS also announced that Keringet Police Station will receive a new police vehicle within the next two weeks to improve patrols and enhance police response.

Murkomen warned drug traffickers that the government would relentlessly pursue those involved in the illegal trade. He also cautioned police officers, chiefs, assistant chiefs and other local administrators against colluding with criminals, saying anyone found aiding criminal activities would face disciplinary and legal action.

On his part, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said the anti-drug operation would be led by Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi until the area is cleared of drugs.

“I have directed the Rift Valley Region Police Commander to lead the operation until we eradicate drugs here,” Kanja said.

The latest measures are part of the government’s campaign to curb drug trafficking and substance abuse, which authorities say are contributing to rising crime, school dropouts and insecurity in various parts of the country.
