Water supply across Nairobi has been restored on schedule following a 26-hour shutdown of the Sasumua Treatment Plant for routine maintenance and upgrade.
“Water supply has been restored in affected areas of Nairobi! Normal service has resumed according to our equitable distribution schedule,” read part of an update notice issued on Sunday, February 22.
Earlier, a public notice issued on February 18 by Martin Ngarilo, the Acting Managing Director of Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company Ltd., announced a planned water supply disruption and the areas affected.
“The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company will temporarily shut down the Sasumua Water Treatment Plant from 20th February 2026 at 06:00 am to 21st February 2026 at 06:00 am to carry out essential works aimed at improving production efficiency,” the notice read.
The shutdown took effect at 6:00 am on February 20, 2026. During this period, several estates across the city experienced water supply interruptions.
Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company said the temporary closure was part of ongoing efforts to improve reliability and enhance water production systems.
Residents affected by the water disruption had been advised to store enough water for use during the shutdown.
Residents had to cope without water or with a reduced supply during the shutdown.
“We advise our esteemed customers to use available water sparingly during this interruption period and to store sufficient water where possible. Any inconvenience is regretted,” the statement noted.
Some of the areas affected included Westlands, Kileleshwa, Kilimani, areas around the University of Nairobi, Dagoretti, Uthiru, Jamhuri, Kibera, Karen, and the Upper Hill diplomatic area, among others.
