Nairobi Women’s Hospital Takes Action Against Student Caught Harassing Nurses

The Nairobi Women’s Hospital has revealed the identity of a lady who was recorded on a viral video harassing nurses and hospital staff in Busia County.

In an official statement released on Thursday, January 4, the hospital indicated that the lady was a student enrolled in their Theatre Technology program and was awaiting graduation. 

Further, the hospital identified the student as Venessa Ongema and condemned her for causing disruption.

“It has come to our attention that Vanessa Ogema, a student enrolled in the Theatre Technology program and awaiting graduation, was reported to have caused disruption and harassed medical staff at a hospital in Busia County.

“We strongly condemn the regrettable actions displayed by Ms. Vanessa,” the statement read in part.

Nairobi Women’s Hospital Details Cause of Action 

Consequently, the hospital noted that it had initiated an internal investigation to gather information on the incident and take appropriate action. 

“These actions do not align with the values and standards we uphold at NWHC. As an organization, we are committed to nurturing compassionate and responsible professionals.

“To address this matter, we have initiated an internal investigation to gather all relevant information and will institute appropriate measures in line with our institution’s policies and procedures,” added the statement.

Additionally, the institution apologized to the healthcare workers who were attacked adding that the programme was determined to train competent graduates.

Attack On the Staff

The video which went viral on Tuesday, January 3, showed the student shouting at the hospital staff. The lady hurled insults at the nurses, scattering files and documents that were on top of a desk. 

Later, she threatened to call an individual she named Ababu. After a while, the lady and another individual left the room after realizing that they were being recorded. 

According to reports, the lady and another individual had taken a patient to the hospital for treatment and demanded immediate attention before other patients.

Additionally, Heath Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha condemned the attack. 

“This recent case of assault on a healthcare worker is not just an attack on an individual. It is an insult of the entire healthcare system and the principals that guide it. 

“I want to commend the medic involved for displaying such remarkable composure and professionalism during the incident,” her statement read in part. 

At the same time, their actions were condemned by KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atella, who called on relevant authorities to take action against the student. 

“The safety of healthcare workers is threatened in sich afacilities. The perpetrators of this heinius act should be brought to book urgently,” stated that SG.
