Naivas Supermarket Ruaraka Closed Following Signs of Collapsing

Naivas Supermarket Ruaraka branch has been closed after showing signs of collapsing.

The building where the supermarket is hosted was closed on December 8, 2024, and marked as dangerous. It now has a yellow tape around it to warn residents and passersby of the imminent danger.

The building adjacent to it has also been marked as unsafe for occupation.

Following the closure, the building that has always been a beehive of activities remained deserted. The shops around the adjacent building have also been closed. Residents have however been seen moving past the building while going about their businesses.

The National Construction Authority has not commented on the issue. Also, the County Government of Nairobi has not issued a statement about the matter. 

Building collapses in Kahawa West

This comes less than two months after another seven-story building collapsed in Nairobi. The apartment that was located in Kahawa West area, Roysambu Constituency had been marked for demolition.

In response to the incident, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said precautions had been taken and occupants had vacated the premises. The building was constructed without approval from the Nairobi County government.

“Casualties are expected to be minimal as the building had been condemned and evacuations affected,” said Sakaja.

Occupants evacuated shortly before the building collapsing

The building had more than 60 tenants that had been evacuated at the time of the collapse. The governor later came out and confirmed that all those who were feared to have been trapped had been accounted for.

One casualty was however reported; a middle-aged lady was injured by the falling rubbles as the building collapsed. According to the police, residents had detected signs of collapse and had notified them and had also urged residents to vacate the building.

Videos of the building had been doing rounds on social media a few days before the collapse.

In May 2024 another five-story building collapsed in Uthiru, Kiambu County. The building collapsed shortly after tenants were evacuated. According to the National Construction Authority, the building the building had been reported to be structurally unfit.
