Nakuru Girls High School has been indefinitely closed following a student rampage in which property was destroyed.
The unrest was reportedly triggered by fears and anxieties surrounding upcoming end-of-term exams.
The school Principal Rose Menjo has confirmed the incident.
The school was officially closed on July 23, 2025, at 8:00 am, and parents and guardians were advised to make necessary arrangements to facilitate their daughters’ travel home. According to the school administration, the students also broke several windowpanes.
“I regret to inform you that there was a disturbance in the school at night after prep at 9.30 pm. During this unrest, the students broke into the evaluation/examination room and destroyed all end-of-term exams for all classes,” read a message from the school to parents.
However, the full extent of the damage will be assessed by the State Department of Public Works.
The situation at the school was contained, and all students are safe.
Schools Closed Over Students’ Unrest
Recently, a number of schools have been closed due to students’ unrest.
Earlier on July 20, 2025, Kaplong Girls High School was closed indefinitely following student protests over alleged sexual harassment by a male teacher, Principal Clara Mitei confirmed.
“The report about the school closure is true following the students’ unrest last night,” Mitei said.
“We released the students to go home at 7am today after they became unruly and disrupted school operations.”
On July 13, Lari Boys High School was closed indefinitely after a fire destroyed key facilities in an incident linked to student unrest.
The fire broke out around 9:00 PM and is suspected to have been started by students in protest.
According to the administration, the boys held protests after they were allegedly denied access to musical instruments. Consequently, all the students were sent home as the school remained closed for investigations into the incident.

Performance
Until 2023, admissions were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.
This was, however, replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.
In the 2024 KCSE, the school’s mean grade declined from 8.50 in 2023 to 8.22 with 22 students out of the 331-scoring grade A- while 220 scored C+ and above.
The school also recorded D- a drop compared to 2023 where the last student scored D+.
