Mukami Kimathi, the widow of the late freedom fighter, Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi, is dead.
Mukami died at the age of 96 while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi after she developed difficulties in breathing.
Mukami’s daughter Evelyn Kimathi Wangui reported that she passed away on Thursday, May 4 night.
Evelyne while confirming her mother’s demise stated that her wish was to have her husband´s body released from Kamiti Maximum Prison and buried at a different place by the State.

Moreover, the late Dedan Kimathi’s wife was among the Mau Mau freedom fighters imprisoned at the Kamiti Maximum Prison during the struggle for independence.
The late Kimathi was captured by the British colonial government in 1956 and executed in 1957 at the prison.
Nonetheless, Mukami will be remembered for her role in pushing for Kenya’s independence from the colonialists, as well as pushing the government to locate the late Dedan Kimathi’s body and accord him a hero’s burial at their Njambini home.
