Activists Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo have been released after spending more than 30 days in Ugandan custody.
The two were reportedly abducted in Uganda on October 1 after attending a rally by Uganda’s opposition leader, Bobi Wine.
According to Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei, the two were released to Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Joash Maangi.

They were escorted by the ambassador and officials from the Ugandan government to the Busia border town, where they were received by Busia County Commissioner Chaunga Mwachaunga.
Foreign Affairs PS Sing’oei expressed gratitude for their release and said more details regarding their disappearance will be shared later.
“Deeply grateful for the efforts by different actors who made this outcome possible. We shall be releasing a more detailed account later,” said Korir.
Earlier, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi had written to the government of Uganda, led by President Yoweri Museveni, seeking answers on the whereabouts of Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, who were abducted in October after attending a campaign rally by Uganda’s opposition leader, Bobi Wine.

In a letter dated October 31, 2025, the Prime Cabinet Secretary followed up on an earlier communication from Kenya’s High Commission in Uganda, which had notified Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the abduction. The initial letter was sent to the Ugandan authorities on October 3, 2025.
In his follow-up, Mudavadi informed Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs that Kenya was yet to receive any formal communication regarding the missing citizens. He expressed concern that nearly a month had passed since the initial contact, with no update on their fate.
“It is with profound concern that I note nearly a month has elapsed since our initial communication, and the Government of the Republic of Kenya is yet to receive a formal response from the Government of the Republic of Uganda regarding the whereabouts and well-being of our nationals in question,” the letter reads in part.

Mudavadi further noted that the Government of Kenya was aware of the recent dismissal by the Ugandan High Court of a habeas corpus application due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
He said that the development had raised concerns in Nairobi and highlighted the need for clear and collaborative action.
He reminded Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs that both Kenya and Uganda are duty-bound to protect the safety of their citizens, both at home and abroad.
“We believe that prompt action on this matter is therefore important to upholding our shared values, honouring the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community, and preserving the strong, long-standing relations between Kenya and Uganda,” said Mudavadi.
Mudavadi urged the Ugandan government to expedite a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Mr. Njagi and Mr. Oyoo.
Foreign Affairs Confident that Matter Will be Resolved
He requested that Uganda respond to Kenya’s earlier Note Verbale and share any relevant findings or actions taken so far.
He added that the Government of Kenya stands ready to offer full cooperation through diplomatic channels and joint mechanisms under the East African Community framework to secure the safe return of the missing citizens.
On his part, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei expressed optimism that Kenya and Uganda would resolve the matter soon.
“Grateful that all the diplomatic efforts towards the resolution of this difficult matter will shortly yield a positive outcome,” Korir stated.

Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo had been missing for more than 30 days since their disappearance was reported. They were reportedly taken by armed men from a petrol station in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, on October 1, 2025. Their phones were subsequently switched off, and their whereabouts have remained unknown since.
The incident had caused distress to their families, sparked public concern in both countries, and attracted international attention from human rights organizations.
