Radio Presenter Florida Kendi Dies

Radio Injili presenter and lead vocalist in the Great Commission Singers Florida Kendi popularly known as Aunty has passed away.

Kendi passed away after a long period of illness. the journalist enjoyed good health until August 3, 2024, when she experienced a sudden spike in blood pressure, which led to the rupture of blood vessels in her brain.

She was later admitted to Siloam Hospital before being referred to Tophill Hospital in Eldoret for further treatment. 

Kericho Senator and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot is among leaders and industry players who reacted to the sad news on Tuesday, December 10.

Cheruiyot described Kendy as someone who despite facing trying times and long seasons of hardship remained unbowed and faced challenges with a determined smile.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing on of Florida Kendi of Radio Injili and lead vocalist in the Great Commission Singers,” Cheruiyot said.

“Florida through her incredibly rare gift of singing, touched souls with her soothing voice, well-composed inspiring songs, and thought-provoking program on radio spanning decades.”

The lawmaker went on to mention that although Kendy departed from the land of the living, her legacy of rich music continues to lighten her fans’ hearts.

“I celebrate her tenacity, her grit and purpose-driven life,” he wrote.

“Condolences to the family, Gospel fraternity and Great Commission Singers on the immense loss of our dear sister and gospel minister. God, give you comfort.”

Tinderet MP Julius Kelly joined Kenyans in mourning her passing reflecting on the impact Kendi had through her ministry and talent.

“I first came to know Florida through radio programs dedicated to children, and later through her ministry alongside Pastor Joel Kimetto and his team during the interdenominational prayer days every New Year at Maraba,” Kelly asserted.

He praised Kendy for her dedication, describing her as a person with “a true calling to serve both God and humanity.”

“Her extraordinary gift of singing touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts,” he added.

Presidential Advisor Great Lakes Region former devolution and energy CS, Charles Keter described Kendi as a remarkable artist who was a beacon of hope and inspiration for many.

He added that her beautiful songs touched the hearts of countless individuals, providing joy and solace during challenging times.

“With her unique ability to connect with people through her music, she made everyone feel seen and understood. Florida fought a good fight, and her powerful voice will forever echo in our memories,” Keter penned.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, the Radio Injili fraternity, and all her fans who cherished her incredible talent and spirit.”

Kendi, who also worked as a radio technician and producer, was a fixture in the Kenyan radio industry for nearly two decades.

She served as a full-time radio technician at Radio Injili  from January 2007.

Prior to that, she was a Radio Producer at Radio Injili from 2005 to 2016, a role she held for over 11 years in Kericho.
