President William Ruto on Friday, January 10, pledged to rescue Moi University from its struggles, including issues with its leadership.
While presiding over the official opening of Ngeria TTI in Kapseret, Uasin Gishu County, the Head of State assured that once all the challenges affecting the university are identified, he will take immediate steps to revive the institution.
“Once all the problems bedeviling the institution are identified, my administration will begin taking steps to help the university regain its former glory, including changing the university’s leadership and ensuring it has sufficient funding to stay afloat,” Ruto stated.
At the same time, he called for patience as his administration works on solutions to restore the institution’s status.
Ruto Promises to turn things around at Moi University
Leaders who accompanied him, including Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, urged the President to find urgent solutions to save the university and prevent its collapse.
“I am pleading with you, Mr. President, do not let Moi University fall under your watch. I also appeal to you to channel funds to the institution, eliminate corruption, and bring in good leadership so that residents can benefit,” Cheruiyot urged.

Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago, on his part, called on the President to build additional hostels at Moi University to accommodate the rising student population.
President Ruto has in the past addressed issues bedeviling the University.

During the State of the Nation address on November 21, 2024, he directed an immediate resolution to the challenges facing Moi University. The head of state criticized the university’s leadership for the ongoing crisis, which had resulted in the institution being closed for 86 days at that time.
Moi University Vice Chancellor introduces a series of measures to address the current issues facing the institution.
He attributed the problems at Moi University to internal administrative and governance issues.
“The remaining challenges for a few universities, such as Moi University, are related to internal administrative and governance issues, which I have given firm instructions must be addressed,” Ruto stated at the time.
However, the University Vice Chancellor, Isaac Kosgey, has outlined several reforms his administration aims to implement in response to the various challenges that the institution faced in 2024.

One of his key commitments is to optimize resource mobilization and efficiency.
He emphasized that his administration would focus on effective resource mobilization and the optimal use of available resources to minimize waste in university operations.
Additionally, he pledged to enhance staff welfare by maintaining regular remittances for monetary deductions and establishing a robust social and mental health support system for both staff and students.
