The never-ending battle between Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza and the Meru County Assembly has taken a new twist following a move by the latter.
Nominated United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party Member of County Assembly Zipporah Kinya who also doubles as the deputy majority leader at the Assembly introduced a fifth impeachment motion against Governor Mwangaza, days after the fourth was withdrawn.
According to the MCA, the motion is part of a move to ensure that Kawira is removed from office.
Their stand came just moments before MCA Zipporah Kinya withdrew the latest impeachment motion tabled against Governor Mwangaza.
The withdrawn motion was the fourth attempt to oust the embattled county chief out of office, adding to the many twists recorded in the never-ending political disagreements in the county.

This withdrawal occurred following a controversial ruling by the Meru High Court which roped in the Njuri Ncheke Supreme Council of Elders in the impeachment case.
Kawira Mwangaza woes
The High Court had ordered the Njuri Ncheke Supreme Council of Elders to mediate the matter, a decision that the County Assembly criticized as an inappropriate intervention, arguing that it is a constitutional issue.
The Assembly contends that the court’s referral of the matter to the council, which they view as a civil authority, undermines the gravity of the constitutional concerns at stake.
Before the withdrawal, a section of elders representing the Supreme Council distanced themselves from the matter.

The Supreme Council on Tuesday issued the statement following a rulin by the Court order which directed the council to mediate.
Impeachment Case
In the case of conflict between the County Assembly and Governor Mwangaza, the Court had ordered them to seek an alternative resolution to the case and to refer to the advice given by President William Ruto.
Consequently, the High Court ordered both parties to appear before the Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders together with their advocates before Wednesday, July 31, 2024.
In the fresh twist however, a section of the elders denied that the Council had sought to be enjoined in Kawira Mwangaza case.
The elders while saying that the council would not mediate warned politicians from Meru County against involving the Council in their politics.
“You know this is politics. So, we demand that those who want to play politics to desist from involving the Njuri Ncheke elders in their politics we are not part of politics,” said an elder.
“Our Meru Community is for us all, but we don’t want to be roped into politics.”
The MCAs had accused Governor Mwangaza of significant constitutional violations, breaches of national and county laws, and misuse of office.
Despite these serious allegations, ten County Assembly legislators who initially supported the impeachment motion have since reversed their stance.
They have urged the withdrawal of the motion in favor of pursuing dialogue between the governor and the assembly to resolve their ongoing disputes.
