The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a warning to motorists as schools across the country break for the long December holiday.
In a statement on Tuesday, October 7, NTSA emphasized the need for urgent measures to ensure the safe travel of schoolchildren as they head home for the holidays.
NTSA announced that it will intensify its operation #WatotoWafikeSalama campaign as schools prepare to close in the coming weeks.
The Authority stated that it will collaborate with various stakeholders to enhance road safety education, increase patrols, and intensify enforcement efforts to ensure children travel home safely.
“With schools set to close in the coming weeks, children across the country will be eagerly heading home,” NTSA said.
“The Authority, in partnership with various stakeholders, will heighten Operation #WatotoWafikeSalama Campaign through road safety education, intensifying patrols and enforcement initiatives along major transport corridors.”

NTSA also cautioned motorists to be extra vigilant due to the wet weather conditions being experienced in several parts of the country, which have made roads slippery and reduced visibility.
“Motorists must mitigate these dangers and ensure the safe journey of every child,” NTSA said.
To safeguard children and all road users during this period, NTSA has urgently called on motorists to model safe behaviour and demonstrate responsible driving by obeying traffic regulations.
The Authority also urged drivers to adapt to the rainy conditions, take extra precautions, and observe safe speeds.

Furthermore, drivers have been asked to avoid flooded roads entirely and follow the “Turn around, don’t drown” principle, while ensuring that children use their seatbelts throughout the journey.
At the same time, the Authority directed drivers to ensure vehicle safety through regular maintenance, including inspection of tyres, brakes, wipers, and lights for optimal wet-weather performance.
“The safety of children during school closures is a collective responsibility that demands action. We must all play our part to ensure children travel home safely,” NTSA added.
