Kapsaret Member of Parliament, Oscar Sudi, has weighed in on the debate surrounding the possibility of extending President William Ruto’s presidential term limits.
Speaking during the Kerio Valley Interdenominational prayers in Elgeyo Marakwet County on Sunday, January 5, Sudi emphasized their respect for Kenya’s Constitution.
The Kapsaret lawmaker made the remarks in response to Tiati MP William Kamket’s suggestion that President Ruto should serve an additional 24 years in office.
Kamket warned those criticizing Ruto, insisting that if they continue with the threats, his stay in office could be extended.
”I come from that county, Baringo County, where we know what the number 24 years means. We are the ones who know how to manufacture for the President to be on the seat for 24 years,” Kamket said.
”If they play, if they play, we can even tell you to go for some additional time.”

In response, Sudi dismissed the lawmaker’s claim stating that Ruto is only remaining with eight years to rule the country.
“Kamket has said here that we can make a decision for the president to rule for the next 24 years. We are people who respect the Constitution,” he said.
“Mr. President, you have eight years left and it will be the time to pack up and go home.”

At the same time, Sudi criticized those threatening the Head of State, labeling him as a one-term president. He went on to state that Kenya has never experienced or had a one-term president.
The statement follows Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei’s sponsored the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2024, which sparked uproar among Kenyans, who viewed it as an attempt by the political class to cling to power.
The proposed law increases the terms of service for the president, senators, MPs, MCAs and governors from the current five years to seven years.

President William Ruto and his ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party slammed the bid to extend term limits for elective offices and distanced themselves from the proposal.
The ruling party through Secretary General Hassan Omar in a statement on October 2 maintained that it remains committed to uphold, defend the spirit of Constitution, terming the bid as “repugnant, retrogressive and primitive”.
The party said that the proposal does not seek to pursue any meaningful objectives beyond the “illegitimate, myopic and retrogressive” ends.
